Best meal per head for $20 ... w/alcohol?

Am looking for what off the top of the head you where you would go and what you would order with a twenty in your pocket, all of Chicago in front of you, and no time, travel or cuisine restrictions. If this type of discussion is too loosey-goosey to stay in Eating Out in Chicagoland, perhaps it could be moved to the Other category.

Do you mean to cook at home, or a restaurant? If you're cooking, it would be easy.

You might be a lot happier with the info you get here if you indicate some criteria for a "best" designation. For instance, location, type of cuisine, number in party are all relevant. If everyone has to pay for parking or travel an hour or more to attend the cost goes up considerably. Also, what kind of drinks are you thinking of? BYOB spots are almost always the best way to go when trying to keep the cost down, but then will you count the cost of the drinks in the $20 pp tab? These things said, the usual advice is to check out the GNR list.

Fierro, an Argentinian restaurant, serves a four course dinner for $15. First course is cured meats, roasted red peppers, and a surprisingly good potato salad. Second course is pasta with pesto sauce and a green salad, third is marinated chicken and Italian sausage, fourth is short ribs and flank steak, also marinated. Second helpings are available for any and all courses and it's BYOB.

Never done it myself but, on the rare occasion, I've seen people drinking wine at Hot Doug's.

One afternoon there was a table of 4, what I'm guessing were wine reps, with 7-8 bottles of wine spread out on the table. They'd sip, discuss, take a note or two, clear their palates with a bite of gator dog, then repeat.

I highly suggest calling and asking before bringing in wine or beer.

That's funny, G Wiv. Last Saturday, on our way out of Alinea, as we were lamenting our "great idea" to have a late lunch at Hot Doug's BEFORE our evening eating The Tour, a couple of the staffers were saying that they often went to Hot Dougs and brought wine! Maybe it was them you saw...

It only really works for 4 people, but 1/2 price bottle night at places like Volo, Deleece and La Sardine could get you out the door for under $20 a head.

My choice: Deleece on Wednesday nights for the half roast chicken with sage cream sauce ($14) and a bottle of Navarro Gewurtztraminer (the wine is normally $45, half price would be less than $6 a glass).

4-5 small plates (between $4 and 7) and a carafe of sangria ($12) keep us happy

Only downside, no reservations, and the line can be long on weekends

dayzella where are you...... ! what about a BYOB place that doesn't charge a corkage fee, would that work?? if so, that would probably give you about twice as many options.. or 1/2 price bottle night at la sardine would help too, though an entree there is $17 alone.
