    LTHers,
I'm driving out to Midway Airport this afternoon and I need some suggestions on places to pick up some dinner-to-go. I was thinking a good sub from Fairplay on Cermak and Western, or some Al's, but they're a bit out of the way. Preferably, though, something you can eat in a car. I'm driving from Hyde Park along 55th, so anything between HP and Midway would work. I'm unfamiliar with the restaurants in that area; I've only been to the Atotonilco out there near Marquette Park. I was wondering if someone knew of a good place off-hand to try. Thanks!

    Love,
    John
It isn't that I'm not full...

If you're already in Hyde Park you might consider the Medidi Bakery at 1327th E. 57th St.

Woops! My spell checker doesn't know Italian. It's the Medici, not the Medidi.

Let's see...something along the way that you can eat in your car...I would get the grilled steak tacos and crispy potato tacos at Zacatacos:

    Zacatacos
    5925 S. Pulaski
    Chicago, IL

There was a thread on potato tacos here, if you're looking for a good description of them.

If you want to take a different route, I find it's a bit faster to go to Midway from Hyde Park by taking LSD to I55 to Cicero (depending on time of day, of course. I wouldn't do this in the middle of afternoon rush hour. Also, it depends where in Hyde Park you are. It may not be a faster route for you.) If you want to do this and indulge an Italian Beef jones, Chickie's is not too far north the Pulaski exit of the Stevenson. If you've never had a Chickie's beef sandwich, you should treat yourself--they consistently finish at or close to the top of our Beefathons.

    Chickie's
    2839 South Pulaski
    Chicago, IL

Also, there is an outpost of Las Islas Marias on 54th and Pulaski, if you like Mexican seafood. It's not, however, very good "eat in the car while your drive food," but I should still throw it out there in case you feel like sitting down and eating or taking a box to go (they do advertise "carry out"), because it's seriously good food (and another board favorite):

    Las Islas Marias
    5410 S. Pulaski
    Chicago, IL

If your intention is to catch a flight at Midway, the food options at Midway are generally pretty good - Manny's, Pegasus, Lalos, Millers Pub, Harry Carey's, etc. and the prices aren't all that much more than the normal locations.
