My husband and I are transplants from SF.

Where do we go? Here are the "go-to" types of places we need....

Sushi: Not for the scene, for the food. In SF our favorite was Atami on Lombard.

Brunch: Where you can sit for a long time. SF favorites: Rose's, Liverpool Lil's (esp. when hungover)

    Chinese: Delivery preferred, or take-out

Bar Food: Something NOT Irish. We aren't against it, but what about a wine bar with great snacks?

Last week we went to Sola...service was AWFUL, the waitress commented, "have you ever had the wine you ordered? I hated it" With that response dinner was off on the wrong foot...the food was very fresh and tasty though. Happy we had a gift certificate or we might have left....

I think your best bet will be to do some quick searches based on the criteria you posted and then read the threads that come up. You'll get a much better feel for the sorts of places being discussed and a sense of the people doing the discussing, than you would if a handful of people just responded to your query with quick lists.

You'll also probably encounter all sorts of interesting information and ideas nestled inside the discussion that you would not get from a a quick list of suggestions.

That, to me, is the value and the fun, of the side --- seeing what comes up and following the tangents.

    Enjoy, and report back.

Try Kaze in Rogers Park for sushi. It isn't a trendy scene but the quality of food and service are fantastic.

For brunch my wife and I prefer two different places. Sans the kids we like Orange off Harrison downtown or Wishbone (either location). Otherwise we go to John's Place where there are as many "little" patrons as there are "big" ones.

Enjoy your search for places to call your own.

Volo in Roscoe Village exactly fits your description of "wine bar with great snacks". They recently won the title of Great Neighborhood Restaurant (a section definitely worth checking out), and they have great food, wine, and service.

Now, I know we like to haze the newcomers and all :) , but according to Google Maps, Kaze Sushi is in Roscoe Village, not Rogers Park:

    Kaze Sushi
2032 W Roscoe St, Chicago, IL
    (773) 327-4860

I can't think of any sushi in Rogers Park, but maybe something has snuck in that I didn't notice...

What's Katsu in? Not exactly Rogers Park, I suppose (Bowmanville?), but not that far either.

Technically, it's considered Peterson Park. Technically, it's also considerably better than Kaze as well.

That is part of West Ridge (AKA West Rogers Park) which extends south to Bryn Mawr on the west side of the cemetery. The actual subdivision is indeed either Peterson Park or Rosehill.

Ooops. Wherever Kaze is, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :D
