Two friends and I made it here last night after passing on dessert at Le Colonial. Carolina Caramel was kind of hard to find b/c the awning was black, and the lighting wasn't particularly bright. We weren't even sure if it was open b/c the lighting inside is on the dim side, and it was looking empty at first. It's a small, simple space, and there was a DJ across from the counter. We arrived around 10pm, but as we left closer to 11pm, quite a few people had come in.
They feature about 6 different layered cakes and 1 special flavor everyday. They also offer a few cupcakes in the same flavors as the slices of layered cake. The most popular flavor of the day was the yellow cake with strawberry creamcheese frosting, so we opted for that. They serve Intelligensia coffee, which the owner explained was specifically chosen to complement desserts. My friends noted its hazelnut flavor. I opted for one of their tea bags. I can't recall the brand. We took our seats after placing our order at the counter, and our drinks and cake were delivered to our table. It was a good sized slice, perfect for 3 of us to share. The yellow cake was moist, and the creamcheese had a slight hint of strawberry flavor.
Upon chatting w/the owner, we learned that the cakes are actually baked by Brown Sugar Bakery and delivered at 3am daily. I guess that's one good reason for Carolina Caramel to have such late hours. I was kind of surprised that they used disposable plates, cups, and forks. The slices are priced at $5.75 each, and all beverages are $2.25. The prices are in line with what you'd pay for a dessert at most restaurants, but upon checking the website for Brown Sugar Bakery, they only charge $1.75-2.50 per slice! Of course, I have no idea how large their slices are, and I understand the need for profit margin to cover the cost of transportation, rent, overhead, etc.
I liked that it was low key and had a neighborhood feel to it. However, being from the suburbs and a baker, I wouldn't call it a destination place. I prefer splurging on desserts that are unique and that I wouldn't make on my own at home. Just my two cents.
