I recently went to Massa Italian Cafe at 807 W. Roosevelt Rd. (by UIC).
Their Italian sandwich very tasty and probably the most interesting Italian sandwich I've had. The thing that made this one really stand out was that they put in soft cool (temperature) cheese after they grill the sandwich panini style. Not enough sandwiches utilize a contrast in temperature between ingredients, and this one did it in a very successful way. The peppers had the perfect heat (taste) and were not at all overpowering or tongue numbing. (I should have taken a picture of the menu so I could list what specific cheese and peppers they used.)
Even though this was lunch, I decided to have dessert. Fried dough with cinnamon, caramel and whipped cream. Really good in a gluttonous sort of way. I imagine it's difficult to mess up fried dough, but I still give the place credit for not. The caramel was the perfect consistency to compliment the dough. The whipped cream didn't really blend with the other flavors, but I just happen to like whipped cream, so I didn't mind having it on my plate.
This place really was a nice treat. I can't really see myself going out of my way to eat there, but if I ever need a quick bite and I'm by UIC I'd probably hit it up again.
