Has anyone tried Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn? After enjoying “The Lives of Others” last weekend, we walked by this restaurant a couple doors away and decided to stop in for dinner.
What most impressed me was the décor. As I looked around, elephants are everywhere, but in a tasteful way. Elephants were even carved into the heavy silverware. The waitress explained that the owners purchased the many large pieces of art in Thailand. The dark red walls and dim lighting showcased the art and the beautiful bar. We had a window table and I would ask for that space again.
Part of my work involves event planning and I love it when others give care to details. When I was handed the menu, I felt like I was receiving a hardcover children’s book. The cover and design were lovely. After ordering, we ventured upstairs to see that space. It was warm (temperature wise), but pretty and it had its own small bar, perhaps a nice space for a private party. I even liked the glassware and the unusual ceiling fans, everything felt like it had been carefully selected.
My fiancé ordered a tofu salad and pad thai. I ordered green curry. If anyone has suggestions about what to order here, I’d love to know. I ordered what the waitress recommended. It was delicious and very spicy (which I asked for). I didn’t like the other dishes as much. The salad greens were room temperature and the peanut sauce, though pretty in little containers, was not anywhere near enough for the huge salad. It looked nicer than it tasted and I would say the same about the pad thai. The green curry looked nice topped with fresh basil. I was surprised that it was so filling and I took most home to my newly-vegetarian son who also loved it.
I would be curious to hear of any other experiences here. If you’ve gone, were there any menu items you would recommend? I would like to return, but with a more knowledge of what to order.
