Have that familiar hankering, but you're on the NW side of the city and your travels aren't going to take you near Argyle Street or Chinatown?

Aim for the Jewel-anchored strip mall at Foster/Pulaski (not far off the Edens) and seek out May Flower Chinese cafe. Mostly take-out and delivery, a couple of tables, but not really a dine-in atmosphere. But there's a huge parking lot, and, hey!, the dining al fresco in the Toyota season is upon us.

After a couple of years of getting menus on my front porch, I finally gave them a try. Pretty typical take on Chinese-American, when you're in the mood for that, but there's one stand-out dish: salt-and-pepper shrimp, sweet, good seasoning (but could be more assertive), seemingly fresh, no heads, but nice and crunchy shells, $10.95.

    Wade,

What have you been smoking? That place is the most godaweful Americhinese place I've tried in many a year. It's not that I doubt that S&P shrimp is the best dish they offer, but that's damming by very faint praise. I'm glad you're feeling OK.

    May Flower :?: :?:

    Wade,

We've been interacting on the Internet for 10ish years and pretty much all of your recommendations have been spot-on, but May Flower? I've been and and have found it to be below average strip mall American Chinese, I'd rather eat Airport Panda Express than May Flower.

Believe me, I'd love to be wrong and I fully intend to drag Steve Z* there in the next week, but I have to say I'm seriously doubting you on this one. ;)

    Enjoy,
    Gary

You'll need a team of horses and the promise of naked dancing girls at the strip mall to get me to even consider it.

    Wade,

Seems I am, to paraphrase David Hammond, an overly sensitive, effete and self-important snooty- pants dilettante. I pooh-poohed your recommendation of Salt and Pepper Shrimp at May Flower based on one long ago visit and the fact it's sandwiched between Subway and Blockbuster in a far city North Jewel anchored strip-mall.

Maybe not the foot stomping goodness of 'Little' Three Happiness S & P Shrimp, but well in the spicy/crunchy/salty/moist range and certainly better than many versions I've had, including Happy Chef's S & P Shrimp a few weeks ago. Egg roll was ok, not Kow Kow, but ok, and, as a bonus, May Flower has decent chili oil.

Wade, please consider this post apology for my skepticism, I should have know better than to doubt the man who has a Colonel Newsome's ham hanging next to an LTHPork Clock.

    Enjoy,
