Turns out it's located in the underground mall between 2 and 3 Illinois Center. We went for the $9.95 lunch buffet today, where I learned it's under the same ownership as Khyber Pass in Oak Park. I found a few things to my liking and other things, well, just so-so.
The obligitory
tandoori chicken starter was nicely grilled but dry and barely seasoned.
Samosas had a crisp crust, but somewhat flavorless turmeric-colored mashed potato filling.
Pakoras had good spicing, but were chewy, not crisp.
Chicken Makhni was the standout. Creamy, tomato-tinged sauce with chunks of tender chicken.
Very nice
saag aloo. Fresh spinach flavor and firm white potatoes.
Good, if underseasoned
chana masala. Chickpeas still firm but tender.
Other dishes included
rice pilau,
cucumber raita, okra (didn't try), eggplant (ditto) and a
lamb curry, which my dining companion found acceptable.
Creamy
rice pudding with chunks of pistachio was surprisingly delicious.
Sadly, the
naan was tough and dry; I doubt it's made on premises.
Overall, the food, while fresh, carefully prepared and not at all greasy, is quite bland. I suspect they've toned down their spicing for the perceived taste level of their clientele. I'm not sure how successful that strategy will be, although it certainly hasn't seemed to hurt places like Klay Oven.
