In a few weeks I'll be up in Palatine for a trade show. It's sort of foreign territory for me, and I wondered if anyone can recommend a good deli nearby. My favorite sandwich is Pastrami on Rye, and where I find that I know the corned beef will be exceptional too.

Kaufmann's Deli on Dempster in Skokie serves some of the best sandwiches and I am overdue to return there, which I will. In fact, if I don't get some ideas from this posting, Palatine is not that far from Kaufmann's.

    Thanks.

In between Skokie and Palatine, there are quite a few in Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove. I'm not an expert on Corned Beef or Pastrami, but you may want to search out:
Chicago Bagel and Bialy on Milwaukee ave
Once Upon A Grill on Dundee
    Elegance In Meats on Dundee
    Kaboff's Deli (Also on Dundee)
    Kuhn's deli on Waukeegan road
A thread that should have some of these:

I'm not particularly familiar with the Palatine area, but I do know that some of these Delis in NB get some high praise for Corned beef and pastrami.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

I have never been so can't vouch for quality but this is fairly close to Palatine. It's in a strip mall tucked back pretty far from the road and shares a large parking lot with a Lowe's. Not sure if it's strictly kosher either.

As I posted in that thread linked above, Kaboff's Deli on Pfingston and Dundee has excellent corned beef, but I've not had the pastrami yet, so I can't vouch for it either way.

Depending on the time of day, the drive from Palatine to Kaboff's is probably about 25-30 minutes (add at least another 15 if you're driving during rush hour).

I'm not sure that any of the places mentioned are 'kosher' in the true meaning of the word. They are deli's if open on Saturday's and serve meat with dairy. Tthe only true kosher deli i knew of was in Highland Park in a strip mall just off Lake/Cook at the Edens and closed many years ago. -Dick

Chicago Bagel is very good, and much like Kaufman's (but with better bagels and seating). It is actually in Wheeling.

budrichard is quite correct in that none of these places are kosher, however Kuhn's, in Deerfield, isn't even kosher-style. It's German. Think bratwurst and schnitzel, not corned beef. If that appeals, there is another location in Des Plaines (separately owned, I believe), which would be closer to Palatine.

For kosher-style somewhat closer to Palatine, there is also Joan & Ernie's.

Definitely not Kosher. Their pastrami and I suspect the corned beef is from Vienna. But it's a great place with excellent chicken soup with kreplach.
