I'm going to the opera tonight and wondering if anyone has a recommendation for food somewhere within a few blocks. Whether its faster or slower food doesn't matter much except that it will dictate which train I take downtown. But so far I haven't found much of anything in the vicinity of the Civic Opera house. I did a search and found a mention of Taco Fresco, but mention and recommendation aren't the same thing.

Isn't it odd there's almost no place to eat in the vicinity of a place that puts on 3, 4, 5-hour long shows?

Not sure if they are open for dinner, but I've had good experiences at Townhouse for business lunches. They have an interesting menu and are just down the street from the opera building.

Rivers is almost next door to the Civic Opera House. Sepia is a short walk west of there, also. There's a Thai restaurant in Presidential Towers, and the new Thai Urban Kitchen in Ogilvie Transportation Center (across the river from the Opera House). Oh, Lloyd's is a block away from the Opera House, or closer. Don't forget Giordano's on Randolph St., which is a block away. There are probably 7 or 8 other close-by places.

I was a Lyric subscriber for 30 years. In that time I never found a good place within walking distance. Sorry.-Dick

I work in the Civic Opera Building. I would recommend Rivers (mentioned above), as well as One North (directly across Wacker, in the UBS Tower). Both of these upscale restaurants are a short, two minute walk from the Lyric Opera and serve high quality, new American cuisine. If you are looking for something more adventurous and are willing to head north to the Randolph Street area, or up to River North, you obviously have many more options.
