Gelato Uno, Berwyn

The Wife and I are getting ready to grab a light dinner and gelati at Gelato Uno, so I reviewed the Dish comments on the place, and was somewhat aghast at the owner's observation. Here's the text, in full:

"Emilio Morrone, an owner of the brand-new Gelato Uno (6625 Roosevelt Rd., Berwyn; 708-749-8866), has gone to ridiculous lengths in the past year to get the place open. “We had people come in from Italy to train us,” he says. “One is still here to make sure everything is going right.” Morrone and his partners (Salerno’s) have more than 100 different gelato possibilities, but offer only 16 at a time (“That’s all our case will hold”), made fresh daily on the premises. Then there’s the menu of panini, arancini, panzerotti, pastries, and biscotti, and the ambitious décor, all marble and granite and chandeliers. “It belongs on Michigan Avenue, not in Berwyn,” says Morrone."

What kind of restaurateur makes disparaging comments about the neighborhood that he has apparently struggled to get his restaurant started in? I'm tempted to give Morrone's name a more Americanized translation...

Yeah, when I read that it gave me pause. It's okay to think you deserve better than Berwyn, but not gracious to say it.

He reminds me of the guy who runs Zealous, who thought he was too good for Elmhurst and announced such opinion to the local media.

So Hammond, how was it?

We went there last weekend and really enjoyed the gelato. I had the tiramisu and my husband had a banana flavor. It was great and a nice addition to Roosevelt Road being next door to Fitzgeralds.

There are also some really nice pastries in the glass case that looked really good.

I hope this place can survive the winter, it must be so difficult to run a gelato place outside of the summer season.

This place seems poised for franchising: they got the logos, though they clearly don't have the system in place (much fumbling this evening, but they haven't been open long, so I cut them lots of slack).

I tried the wild cherry, tiramisu, banana, and melon. Melon was by far my fav, followed by the heavy espresso tasting tiramisu. The others were kinda 'meh.' I also had issues getting my order correct. It was actually quite comical, as they got both of the things I ordered wrong (size and flavor) even though the orders were printed out correctly, and we were the only ones ordering anything at the time. This place will probably do ok since Freddie's closes so early.

Melon was a standout (The Wife commented on it right out of the box), though I liked the nocciola, too, and the coconut. Pistachio and other flavors tended to blur.

Out of curiosity, I stopped next door at De Nico's (apparently in partnership with Gelato Uno), and got a slice. Jeez, can pizza get worse than this? The crust seems very "corporate," as though it arrived at the store preformed. Huge amounts of bad cheese. Bewilderingly bad...and connected to Gelato Uno through a pair of French doors.

If you ever go to gelato uno I highly recommend the oreo one. it is very, very good. By the way, I love Dinico's but i respect your opinion^^^ I think it is only you that doesn't like it because every one in the neighborhood does.

Oreo wasn't available tonight, and one of the cool things about this place is that they rotate like 100 different flavors.

I sincerely doubt, however, that I'm the only one who finds De Nico's abhorrent, but if you love it, well, love is strange.

well if you go and it is available i would recommend getting it. (I'll start a forum to see who likes and doesn't like the pizza.)

still has the "Grand Opening" signs up. I'm not sure if they closed for a while and reopened, or if they're just slow; they certainly treated me like I was one of their first customers with liberal sampling, an extra-generous portion "for your first visit," and accepting a credit card for $3.53 ("no problem, we're just getting started.") It was somewhat eerie to find this thread already in place from August after I had never noticed the place and was welcomed so hopefully.

The gelato: good. The cappuccino had a little bit of a smoky-burnt aftertaste, but it at least called to mind real ground coffee beans. The bacio was exemplary - great bittersweet chocolate and buttery hazelnut crunch.
