Was driving around the greated Schaumburg area for lunch today, trying to decide what I wanted to eat, and I remembered the Pierogi Place as someplace I'd been wanting to try.
Pretty small inside, but I was happily greeted by the sounds of native Polish-speaking diners and even overheard one woman telling others at her table that the food was just like they made in her village at home in Poland. Was also pleased to see some non-Polish speakers and others enjoying their lunches.
The menu covers a large variety of pierogi and other Polish food. Pierogis are served either boiled or fried. Couldn't tell if the Pierogi were made in-house, because I did see some packages of (at least high quality) frozen pierogi in a case behind the front counter.
They also had a featured special, which was a variety of pierogi (meat, meat & spinach, kraut & mushroom, potato, potato & cheese, potato & cheddar) and "soup" which was a serving of their brothy borsch. I was initially put off by all the dill I saw in the borsch (not a big fan of dill) but it was in a nice enough balance with all the other flavors (including some rice) that it did not overpower, and on a cold, overcast day, left me pretty happy.
I opted for boiled pierogi, trying to be kinder to my waistline. It was my first experience with meat filled pierogi, and I was plesantly surprised at how much I liked them. Also, more dill in the meat fillings, but again, not overused to the point it spoiled them for me. Pierogis are served covered with a little cooked onion and bacon, and sour cream on the side.
Even if they were not pierogis made in the shop, whoever performs the magic in the kitchen knows secrets about boiling pierogi that I do not. They were all fantastic.
I plan on going again. For place in the area, it's a nice treat in being something different that is also done well. It's been open for a few months, and I was happy to see it seemed to be going strong at this point. They do have some tables for eating there, and while carry out was not quick (it took about the time I'd take to cook the pierogis, which I'd rather have than ones that are overcooked waiting for me) and food was still plenty hot when I got back to my office. Several people also came in to pick up orders. The staff behind the counter was more than willing to answer questions from customer, too.
