:?: Any suggestions. We are going to a concert and won't be able to "sit down" until 6:30 or so...We were going to Riverside Tavern on Harlem, but they close at 7 pm. There is a Chezch restaurant on Roosevelt? Cermak? that is supposed to be like a supper place...but I can't find it. Any suggestions? I know a couple of Italian places, but I was hoping for Bohemian or French or...Johanna
Looking for great food at good prices here on the banks of the Des Plaines River in River Forest.

Is the Czech place you're thinking of Klas, on Cermak in Cicero? Antonius and I have eaten there twice. The building and interior is amazing, definitely worth seeing. Some of the food is very good (potato pancakes, their breads), some just okay (e.g. the duck I ordered on my first visit was a little dried out). Good Czech beers on tap, though.

I'm not sure if your concert was tonight.

There is a Czech restaurant on Cermak right off or Harlem, called, I believe, Czech-American Inn. It's a bit closer to River Forest than Klas which is way down Cermak, actually in Cicero. I have never been to Czech-American Inn, but I have heard good things about it, in that cheap Chicago Bohemian style of dining way.

I wonder if there is any restaurants in River Forest besides the beef place Annie's and River Forest Grill (and Pannera). Oh, and the crappy Pronto Roma. To paraphrase David Hammond, the best dining in River Forest is in Forest Park. I am always happy at Jimmy's, the bar-restaurant on Madison. I am not *always* happy with Yum Thai, a bit west on Madison, but when it's on, it's very good. As I've warned many a time, ask for the translated menu.

I recently tried the new Penny's in Oak Park, just across the street from River Forest. I was very hungry an hour later, although the dumplings were not that bad.

There's always a, now famous, Big Mickey.

For those who haven't been to Klas, don't delay, 'it may be later than you think.' I have no inside information but there are some troubling signs: shortened hours, closed on Mondays, some menu items eliminated, and higher prices. I should point out that their prices are still very reasonable (I do miss those $3 half-liters of Radegast on special). I'm a big fan of Klas, only partly for the food (can be variable but often very good). Even on an off day, it's still fun to visit this historic restaurant. I hope it's around another 80 years.
