I seem to trail the boards by about 6 months to a year. There were some good threads a while back (on Chowhound) about where the best croissant were to be found. We've now tried three that were recommended, Fox & Obel, Sweet Thang and Vanille Patesserie. While all three are acceptable, the plain croissant at Vanille Patesserie was the clear winner for the whole family. They have an intense butteryness that easily distinguishes them from the pack.

I was the one who did the croissant hunt a while back. I'm glad you tried F & O's against the my other two favorites, which I hadn't done. Vanile's is smaller, more appropriately sized for a croissant, and as a result, I believe, is able to cook properly.

I really need to try Ambrosia Bakery in Barrington and the french bakery in Lake Forest - these were the other 2 recommendations made at the time. But they're a bit out of my way.

I've been doing a very half-assed search for good croissants - unfortunately, my list of unacceptables just keeps growing and growing. Adding to the list this past weekend was Bittersweet and the Medici - interestingly enough, they both suffered from the same affliction: leadeness. I don't like having to do battle with a pastry, much less one that should be light and flaky, not greasy and, well, leaden.
I've only had a Vanille Patisserie croissant that someone brought back for me, and while good, it wasn't great (but it was hours old, so I'm holding back on final judgement).
I'd be interested in a sweet Chowhound outing sometime - anyone else?
