Any favorite breakfast/lunch spots, mainstream or with an ethnic twist within 1-2 miles of Harlem-Irving area. Kinda tired of Sally's. The only requirement is a parking lot. (Very senior citizen involved.) Thanks.

The Onion Roll - 6935 W. North Ave. Very, very old school. Good for breakfast or lunch. Can't remember about parking (I think I parallel on the street right outside).

Cafe Laguardia West - http://www.cafelaguardia.com/west/ . Brilliant lunch specials with black bean soup and salad; Cuban sandwich and roast pork sandwich always hit the spot as well. Has a parking lot.

Thanks Santander-This is out of my neck of the woods, and nothing jumps out at me in the vicinity-that has a parking lot. Onion roll may be the ticket for some of the bi-monthly breakfasts/lunches with mom.

Try the Super Cup, Lawrence & Central. The place is kind of dated inside but the food is excellent.

Try Phoenix at Cumberland & Lawrence (southeast corner). Standard Greek diner with big portions and good breakfast selections. It's just a hop, skip and jump from Harlem-Irving.

    Thanks Wad and Chop.
Actually tried SuperCup-good fried potatoes, and it's a nice touch that they leave a coffee pot on the table.

In much the same world as Sally's:

    Family Palace
    4751 N Harlem Ave
    Harwood Heights, IL 60706
    (708) 867-5520

Used to be a post-work diner stop for us if Sally's looked too crazy. Basic diner - I don't really recall the food well, but we ate there more than a few times, which we wouldn't have done if it was bad.

Mr. K's across the street from Sally's.

Not very pretty inside, kinda tired, but darn good food. And affordable!

Respectfully disagreeing with kenji's opinion, the 2 times my curiosity has led me to eat at Mr. K's [pretty much across the street from me], I've found the food to be even more tired than the decor.

I'll second a rec for Super Cup at Lawrence & Central. Also to be considered is Blue Angel at Foster & Milwaukee [and you can get a movie, go to the dollar store or American Science & Surplus... what a strip mall!]. And if you want to drive a wee bit, Kappy's at Harlem & Dempster tries much harder than your average diner to zip up the variations on the usual menu suspects.

Funny how your taste is just the opposite of mine. I eat lunch at Mr. K's a few times a week. I'm a counter kinda guy. It's just basic cafeteria fare but that's its allure. Fair prices and nice size portions and there's always a newspaper (!).

Super Cup seems to have new owners and I've tried it a few times but I think the service and food is better at Mr. K's.

Blue Angel, to me, is good food but expensive for that kind of cuisine. I'd eat at Lucky Grill on Milwaukee and Sunnyside before I would the Blue Angel. Although Blue Angel serves liquor.

I agree with the thumbs up for Kappy's. George who owns it was an executive chef for Rosebud and a few other places. It is a great deal for the money he figures that by pricing right you make up for in customer loyalty. You should also try one of his other restaurants, America's Hot Dog on Navy Pier.
