I'll be in Chicago this coming weekend to take in three nights of Phil Lesh and Friends at the Riviera. I used to live in that general neighborhood, but a lot has changed in the last ten years.

Can anybody recommend some quality late-night options in that area? I seem to remember a Mexican place under the tracks on Lawrence that had great huaraches. Does anybody know if that still exists?

    I'm open to any recommendations!

    Thanks

    Hi,

Marie's Pizza on Lawrence just west of Pulaski.

Lawrence and Kedzie has many middle eastern food options. There is also quite a bit of Korean in the area.

    Regards,

The best food within walking distance of the Riviera is on Argyle (mostly Vietnamese, but some Chinese and Thai -- you can do a search for "Argyle" for specific recommendations). Unfortunately, most places there don't stay open that late. We usually eat there before the show; otherwise you're stuck with something palatable but fairly undistinguished like Carmela's right next door to the theater, or else driving.

Things have changed! If you haven't seen the neighb in a while, you may be surprised.

There are no huaraches on Lawrence under the tracks now, but the open late options in the immediate vicinity are Agami, a kinda swanky sushi place, discussed here and elsewhere if you search on the name. It's kind of cool inside, and while I am not really knowledgeable in the sushi department, I have enjoyed their rolls, but have always gotten takeout. Not at all cheap. They're open until around midnight, later on weekends, and are just south of the Riv on Broadway.

Also nearby and open late is Silver Seafood (Chinese), which is also discussed in several threads if you search for the name. They've had ups and downs, but I've had very good shrimp there, and I consider them moderately priced. They're open until 1, I think, on the weekends, 11 or 12 during the week. It's on the east side of Broadway, just north of the Just Tires north of Lawrence.

Fat Cat is the newest thing open nearby--a rather nice bar with food. I've only been in there once, and would avoid the black bean burger. The fried mac & cheese was very good. SW corner of Lawrence & Gunnison.

There's always Fiesta Mexicana, just north of the Green Mill on Broadway, but I don't know how late they're open. Hit and miss, but ok. Carmela's tacos, are pretty decent, on Lawrence just west of Broadway, certainly inexpensive. Don't know the hours of those, however. Don't know enough about Broadway Grill, right on the corner, to comment--just had a distinctly fair grilled cheese once. Good luck!

Magnolia Cafe is just a couple blocks from the Riv, and it's open till 11:30 pm. It's excellent. Contemporary American cuisine.

    Holly,

I didn't realize Silver Seafood was open that late,* and is a good late night suggestion in the immediate neighbourhood. Carmela's, right around the corner on Lawrence, has just-fine tacos, but were me I might drive 5-10 minutes to either San Soo Gap San or Hai Woon Dae for Korean BBQ, both open until 5am or better.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

*Just to appease my belt and suspenders nature, I called Silver Seafood, they are indeed open until 1am every night, at least according to the man who answered the phone.

My wife and I are going to see Lenny Kravitz at the Riviera this weekend. I was thinking of heading west on Lawrence to Marie's for some late-night pizza (never been there), but thought I'd ask for recommendations within walking distance, too. My wife says she's not up for Asian, so that leaves out many of the recommendations from this thread. Any thoughts?

If you're in the mood for pizza, there's Gigio's. Dingy surroundings, but great thin crust pizza.

Magnolia Cafe has already been mentioned, it's definitely not Asian and the food is fantastic.

Fat Cat has also been mentioned, it's casual food from a chef who used to work at Tru. If you go, try the Cuban Pork Belly Sammy.

Crew also has good casual food and they're open until 2AM.

Marigold, a modern Indian restaurant, is less than a block away and they're open until 11pm on weekends.

Demera is a new Ethiopian restaurant that is also open until 11pm on
    weekends.

B&Q Afro Root Cuisine is a nearby Nigerian restaurant, but they close at 10pm.

Gotta say, I really like Dib on Lawrence near Sheridan for thai-sushi. Menu and ambiance is near clone of Indie Cafe, down to the chopstick anvils. If anything the food is a notch better than Indie, and no waits.
