We ventured out for a hearty soup and Polish food in today's freezing weather, and decided to try Barbakan. Its located on Central around Belmont, across the street from Grota. I had the mushroom soup, which was amazing and different than any other mushroom soup. The mushrooms were kind of shredded, it sounds odd, but it worked in the soup. It was earthy, light and creamy and had a nice intense mushroom flavor. It also had a few rotini pasta thrown in that were unnecessary, but harmless. Hubby had the white borscht, which was also very good, creamy but not heavy, and came with some sausage chunks and a hard boiled egg. For entrees we had the meat pierogi, which were probably the best I have had here (comparing to Podhalanka, Halina's and a few others), the dough was airy, and the meat filling was very tasty. Hubby had the potato pancakes which were only ok, they were a bit greasy and very thin - we prefer the type that are hand grated and thicker.
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere too, some interesting paintings and dark wood. the Ms pac man and other machines were a bit out of place though, but overall I found it cozy and inviting and would definitely go back.
