I recently got this email from Port Edward, a great seafood place on the banks of the Fox River in Algonquin. It's a bit of a hike from the city, but you will not find a more romantic place serving great seafood anywhere.

The Holiday's are here and Port Edward Restaurant is offering you the opportunity to purchase a gift certificate for $50.00 and then you will receive a FREE $10.00 gift certificate that can be used on another visit.

You can also do your Christmas shopping on line at www.portedward.com or in our Nautical Gift Shop. We offer a large variety in jewelry, music boxes, nautical bells and clocks, canes, crystal figurines, ornaments, lanterns and much much more.

December dinner specials this month are the Tuesday All 'U' Can Eat Maine Lobsters $34.95 & Thursday All 'U' Can Eat Snow Crab Legs $25.95

This means that you can buy a $50 gift certificate when you get there, get an extra $10 free gift certificate and apply the $60 towards your bill of $69.90 for two lobster dinners. I plan on going this Tuesday for all I can eat lobster!

    stevez,
I received the same e-mail, I heard good things about this place. There Friday seafood buffet is said to very good, have you ever been? Please let us know how it is. All you can lobster is right up my alley. The fist time I did the AYCE lobster at Pappadeaux on Thursdays it was very good. They were 1lb lobsters that were cooked very well, I was there last month I was pretty disappointed. they were soggy and no taste and the price now is $38.99. Have fun cracking!

Port Edward has been around for 30 or 40 years but has not lost it's edge of excellant seafood in a great setting. They also have a Sunday brunch that is super with all the normal brunch items plus made to order omlets, crepes, waffles, shrimp, salmon and carved beef. What I miss is their cruise boat that served lunch and dinner on a nice 1-1/2 cruise on The Fox River. The operator of the boat died 2 years ago and has not been replaced. I grew up in Algonquin with frequent eats at Port Edward and still make the hour trip back every now and then just to eat there.

I've been going to Port Edward sonce the early 80's, although as has been mentioned, it has been around a lot longer. The food is always quite good, although it is usually best to stick with the simpler preparations. I have been to the Friday seafood buffet a couple of times and it's got a nice selection, although I'm not much of a buffet fan in general. Normally, I stick to items off the menu.

I have driven past the place 100 times and have never made it here. In fact, none of the locals have mentioned this place in the five years I have been here. Other than the specials, what does this place run per person? Like usual, the website seems to avoid prices.

Kim - any other McHenry Co. great finds??

The prices tend to be slightly on the high side for the local area, but not too bad by Chicago standards. It's worth it for the ambiance. If you're going for a date or a special occasion, be sure to reserve one fo their special dining areas (the Porpose or the windmill are private and very romantic).
