Has anyone noticed the signs on a building on the north side of Irving about 1500 W.? They say Julius Meinl. My husband's theory is that it is their warehouse or offices or something, but he is probably trying to keep his hopes in check because we live right around the corner. I am hoping for a shop so close!

If it's the place I'm thinking of, the sign on the door has been there for a couple years (since the shop on Addison/Southport opened). I'm fairly certain it's their corporate office. I don't have a phone book handy, but at least a year ago, a second location (in the vicinity you described) was listed in the white pages, possibly identified as an office.

This IS where the offices for Julius Meinl are.

I think I've read that Julius Meinl wants to open its second Chicago location in Andersonville.

If I'm remembering correctly, then it was most likely a blurb in the West Andersonville Neighbors newsletter.

According to Metromix, Julius Meinl will be opening a second location at 4400 N Lincoln, the old Block 44 space.

Well, it ain't Andersonville (sadly), but it's a whole hell of a lot closer than the other (very popular with this writer) location. Very glad to hear this news!

I believe the West Andersonville Resident's Council mention of Julius Meinl in Andersonville was a bit premature, and before the Block 44 building purchase.

However, if it's not inappropriate to mention it here (in hopes of making Gypsy Boy less "sad"!)... though we're not Viennese by any stretch of the imagination, the coffee scene in Andersonville is about to change (for what we think is the better!).

We should be open by early summer after almost a year of trying to get into this spot:

We don't have a real website up yet, but curious minds could probably dig up a bit of dirt, if interested.

    Cheers!

I'm always eager to be a bit less sad and am happy to welcome you--even if a bit prematurely--to Andersonville. I've already clicked on your link and look forward to the opening, Austrian or not. :D With the advent of Pasticceria Natalina and the apparently burgeoning restaurant scene in the 'hood (Anteprima, Ikosium, Pepitone's, Cotes du Rhone...), it will be a pleasure to have yet another option, making an already great neighborhood even better! Thanks for posting.

I went past the old Block 44 site at Lincoln and Montrose on Friday and there appeared to be work going on inside. The windows were still blacked out so I couldn't see what. Julius Meinl by spring?

I've noticed the recent activity as well. When I walked by yesterday (Monday), the workmen were still there and the doors were open. They've completely gutted the inside - kitchen and former dining room/bar areas.

Wow, this is exciting news. For those, like myself, who are unfamiliar with "block 44", on which corner of the Lincoln/Montrose intersection is this located. I assume it has to be either the SE or NE corner, though I can't recall if anything currently resides in those. It looks like I'll have to take the bus home more often to scope out the work being done.

I used to live by the first Julius Meinl in Lakeview and I adored it. I guess I just move to the right neighborhoods at the right times for some delicious coffee and pastries.

I drove by there today and they had paper Julius Meinl signs in the window. At least it looks like they're making progress....

you can get Julius Meinl inside Pie downtown (615 N State).

they have a flowershop Epoch then started serving Pie within... Pie is now the upstairs focus of the storefront... there's a single table in the back to sit at, it's nice though... coffee is good too.

That is a really tough area to open up in, especially that spot in particular. They spent a lot of money redoing the entrance. Good luck to them, they're gonna need it.

BTW, how many restaurants has Golden Apple seen come and go in the past few years?!

Can't wait to find out their opening date! No luck with my web searches yet. If I see anyone around there, I'll ask.
