best pierogi for Pulaski Day?

As a Chicago newcomer, I am looking to celebrate Pulaski Day properly. Where might I go for excellent pierogi?

Do a search for Smak-Tak and Podhalanka. They're board favorites and also, I believe, Great Neighborhood Restaurant Award-winners.

Smak-Tak's assorted pierogi plate is simply outstanding.

To help me find Chicago’s best pierogi, I enlisted Steve Zavesky, a third-generation Whiting, Indiana, native and a two-time pierogi eating–contest champion at Whiting’s Pierogi Festival (Friday 27 through Sunday 29). We hit eight spots in five hours (Zavesky polished off 27 dumplings during the search), always ordering potato and cheese for the control.

Whoops, I stand corrected. I'm actually pretty surprised that it's not, though it seems that maybe it's been too newly "discovered" by the board to have received the nomination.

I had amazing pierogi at Barbakan a few weeks ago. The dough was light and the meat filling was very tasty.

For frozen pierogi, in my opinion, the best in the city is without a doubt Alexandra's.

A little late for Pulaski Day, but this week I picked up two kinds of pierogi at Delightful Pastries: cheese potato and mushroom sauerkraut. The thin dough is generously filled. Both were very tasty but very different. The potato cheese were very mild (perhaps farmers cheese?) and the mushroom sauerkraut were quite peppery with more mushrooms than sauerkraut.

Try A & R Pierogi co. at 86th and Harlem in Bridgeview.The have carryouts and frozen.The mushroom and kapusta (saurkraut) are great.Also have a good potato pancake.Lot of the Polish locals shop there.
