Showing my age here, but years ago there was a beef stand called Butch's at 14th & Lake in Melrose Park across the street from the Cock Robin's. Butch used to add just a dab of BBQ sauce to his Italian Beef, which gave it a slightly sweet element to the flavor, & just a hint of redness in color. In it's day, it was a top notch hole in the wall stand, with great Sausage, Vienna dogs & fries done exactly like Gene & Jude's.
Last I heard, a Butch's Beef stand opened recently around 20th & Lake, but I've not had a chance to visit there as I usually end up at Gene & Jude's on my Chicago visits.
It's tough being a Bears fan in Cheesehead land!
