Mr. Maki and I are going to tour a potential wedding venue in a couple of weeks, the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake.

The appointment is at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. We're going with both sets of our respective parents and we'd like to have breakfast beforehand. Since we have to be in Grayslake by 10:30 and there will be six of us, I need a place that is close to Grayslake (within 20 minutes or so) and one that either takes reservations or won't be too busy at 8:30/9:00 in the morning so we can be seated and out of there in a reasonable amount of time. I was thinking of the Walker Brothers in Lake Zurich, but I'm not sure they take reservations. I've never been there that early, so I'm not sure what the crowds are like at that time.

Mr. Maki, my parents and I will be coming from the south, and his parents live in Hawthorn Woods, so if the place is south of Grayslake or very near it, that would be great, just so we're not going too far north before going to the barn.

    Any input/other ideas?

Abe, you probably won't believe it, but Last Chance Saloon in downtown Grayslake does great breakfasts on Saturday & Sunday morning.

Wife & I have been frequenting Last Chance for breakfast for a few years, and it's always solid, made with care. Their 'Big Breakfast' includes eggs your way, sausage/bacon, home fries, & pancakes/toast, for under six bucks.

Lately, when I've been in health-concious mode (hard to do when reading LTH!) they've made me a wonderful veggie egg white omelette that really shows some dexterity.

And since the no smoking ban went into effect, it even smells good in there. Nice folks as well.

    Give it a shot (chance)!

if they are affiliated with the Ellys on Milwuakee in Glenview then I have to agree...great steak (tender skirt steak longer than the plates) and eggs..

A good place we try to make it to every couple of months.
It's at the corner of Milwaukee and Buckley on the North side of Libertyville.
    Good specialty pancakes.
    Wider variety of breakfast meats.
    Has a Seattle's Best inside.

    Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
If it's between Ellys and Walker Bros. I think they both have comparably tasty food and both could probably get you in and out within your time frame (even without reservations). Lines may be daunting but move quickly, Ellys is generally faster though. There is however a difference in atmosphere--with the dark woods and lower lighting, I'd consider Walker Bros. a more refined place than Ellys, which always has a hurried, bustling diner-like feel on mornings. However, Ellys is a few bucks cheaper on the whole and will give you more food. Both have sizeable menus with something for everyone. Keep in mind that if part of what is drawing you to Walker Bros are their specialty items, like the apple pancake or danish garden, that those take longer to make and may push you past your time constraints.

There was a thread on a newish place called The Caboose in Mundelein. I've never been, but it might be an option too.

Great spot, RIDICULOUS wait time. I've had to wait 35+ for lunch. Weekend breakfasts are a madhouse.
