Recently I had a friend from Texas come up to Lombard for a seminar. I wanted to take him to a dinner that he probably couldn’t get there. So we went to the Greek Islands. We had saganaki, leg of lamb, and Mediterranean Sea bass.

I thought the saganaki was too greasy and my bass was overcooked. I tried a piece of his lamb and it too tasted a little too well done and dry. He seemed reluctant to criticize it. The two entrees came with a side of rice or vegetables. These were both extremely small size sides. I did enjoy my vegetable side. Even though it was a weeknight, I thought the service was poor.

A local Greek friend of mine commented to me that while the Lombard Greek Island’s is owned by the same as the one downtown, it is too Americanized for him and the food is not very good. I don’t know about the first part, but I would agree with the second.

The next night he wanted to go to Harrah’s in Joliet. So I did a search of LTH and found Merichka's. Based on the info it looked like it was on the way and quick. We both had the steak poor boy, he had fries, and I had the twice baked potato. I also wanted to try the house salad with their homemade dressing.

This was another disappointing experience. The salad was iceberg lettuce with 4 or 5 carrot slivers. The dressing was very good. I thought the poor boy with butterine was ok, but the twice baked tasted liked it had been under a heat lamp for a couple of hours.

The third night he wanted to go to the Chicago Hard Rock. He is a big fan. I took a pass.

Pretty much what I have experienced at both of the places you mentioned.

Merishka's, I was looking forward to the garlicy sandwich, but found it to be only an average sandwich that I have not returned for.

Greek Islands Lombard has never impressed me the 4 or 5 times I have been dragged there.

I feel bad for your out of town friend that this was the sampling of food he got. Maybe his next visit will be better. Go GNR, and you should do ok next time.

That was in my plans, but he sprung his Thursday night trip to the Hard Rock on me at the last minute.

I did a search for GNR’s in the Lombard area, except for Oriental restaurants, didn’t see any. He had rejected Oriental type restaurants in an email exchange. Certain logistic constraints prevented us from going too far from the Lombard area.

I can understand that dilemma. Next time hopefully he gives you a little advanced warning of his visit, and expresses some willingness to go into Chicago for more than a visit to Hard Rock.
