I had been hoping to celebrate graduating with my Ph.D. by dining at West Town Tavern with my husband and some of our family (eight people in all). However, when I called there a few minutes ago, I was informed (quite snidely) that I could not make a reservation as they will not seat a party of eight. So...I guess we won't be doing that. I had initially been interested in West Town Tavern (which my husband and I have been to and liked) because my in-laws prefer plainer fare and we've been most successful in taking them to places that emphasized comfort food (Dixie Kitchen has been a hit in the past, but I'd prefer not to go there again for this occasion--and anyway our local DK is kaput). I'd love to find someplace with a similar atmosphere to West Town Tavern (i.e. not ultracasual) with food that will not intimidate the more conservative eaters in the party but will still be enjoyable for everyone. I've considered Chuck's, which I know everyone would like, but I would prefer something a little fancier. I'd love any suggestions anyone can offer!

We were part of a party of eight at Sepia around "the holidays" and were pretty pleased. They were able to give us a round table, which I think is preferable for a group of that size. The food and wine were good and everybody had a good time.

Sweets & Savories. Burgers, steak frites for the more conservative eaters. Plently of choices for people looking for a bit more.

Have you considered The Gage? Gives you the added benefit of lakefront strolling pre/post dinner.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys! (Those are all places that my husband and I have visited and loved, and we may well take family there in the future.) My husband just called West Town Tavern and was able to make a reservation for eight people, so we'll be doing that. Not sure why I had a problem...
