    Hello all!

I'm headed up to Kedzie for the first time tonight and want to make the most of the fact that I'm traveling for AGES to get there on the CTA!

I think we're going to eat at Salam, Semiramis or Dawali based on the recs on this board, but I'd also love to do some food shopping (imports, bread, anything else interesting). Can anyone direct me where to go/where to stroll?

    Many thanks!

The thread about the Kedzie Kaper should tell you everything you need to know.

Thanks! It mostly seems to list restaurants, not grocery type stores, though, unless I'm missing something?

I think you are. At least 3 bakeries (Trigal, Nazareth, Sanabel) and a grocery strore(Zeita) are in that thread. Have fun!

Also, Al Khyam grocery is next to Al Khaymeih restaurant.

Sahar is in the strip mall north of Lawrence:

Jaafer sweets is in the same strip mall as Sahar.

Andy's Fruit Ranch, across from Al Khyam/Khaymeih, has some interesting stuff too..

Have fun! (bring a cooler bag? :) ).

Great pita, olives, and labneh selection at Al Khyam. While the olive mix (green, kalamata, pepperoncini) isn't as good as the olive bar at Whole Foods, it's tasty and is around $4/lb. Be cautious with the packaged goods - - some jars and boxes look like they've been there quite awhile.

Andy's Fruit Ranch has a surprisingly great beer selection. Lots of seasonal and regional choices. It seemed so out of place that I asked the cashier about it. She said that the manager is really into great beer.

    Enjoy,
    Ronna

    Bakery (not sweets):

    Tannourine
Excellent taboon style bread (10" flat breads fresh from the oven) as well as standard pita. FYI this stuff keeps really well in the fridge (up to two weeks) and even longer in the freezer. Feel free to stock up. Another FYI, always heat Arabic bread (unless it is baked the same day) before eating in a toaster or oven, otherwise you might as well tear off a piece of cardboard to scoop up your baba.

    Sweets:

    Nazareth
Everything is excellent. I really like their walnut ma'amoul - semolina butter cookies filled with ground walnuts, sugar and cinnamon. Kul'aj is also a standout - milk custard in filo dough. Baklawa is excellent.

    Grocery:

    Sahar Meat Market II
Excellent dry goods and a great affordable butcher. Their ma'anek (lamb sausages) are f'ing awesome. Pick up some lamb brains for good measure. They make you smarter!

    Restaurants:

For Palestinian skip Dawali and go to Salam. Ask about daily specials.

For Lebanese go to Khayameih, pick up an affordable bottle of wine next door at Andy's.

For Iraqi/Assyrian go to George's Kabab Grill. Do not order hummus/falafel/baba. Everything else is awesome.

I always liked Pita House right next to Dawali, just a little Middle-eastern style bodega with a baking operation in the back, but I have no idea what if any evening hours they have
