We keep trying to find a nice casual tavern/bar/grill to have a good Friday night steak near Villa Park. Think, The Little Owl in downtown Geneva, or Schaller's Pump in Bridgeport. Thanks.

Hmmm....I can think of a couple of casual tavern-y places but I don't order steak at any of them. Heck I doubt they even offer steak. For steak, you might try and get a seat at Wildfire in Oak Brook Mall but I never eat there because I refuse to wait over an hour for a restaurant in a mall...I'm picky that way.

    Tavern-y places:
    Elmhurst Public House
    683 West St. Charles Road
    Elmhurst, IL 60126
    (630) 834-8989 phone
    Basic pub/Irish/American menu. decent burgers

    McNally's Irish Pub
    122 South York Street
    Elmhurst, IL60126
    Phone: (630) 941-7100

irish pub, I think the management is now separate from the St. Charles one. Too much cigarette smoke for me.

    Taylor St. Brewing
    717 East Butterfield Road
    Lombard, IL 60148
    Phone: (630) 990-8700
Again, I find it fairly ordinary but painless. Decent burgers.

Wish I could think of a casual steak place but Steven's Steak house closed a few years ago. Maybe Costas? Honest out here in the restaurant free zone, there just aren't a lot of places like what you describe. I've been know to hike to Naperville to visit Hugo's.

    Sorry.

Not sure how their steaks are, but you might want to try Mack's Golden Pheasant near North Avenue & 83 in Elmhurst. It's definitely casual, has that tavern feel to it and all tap beers are $1 on Friday nights and they have quite a variety.

The DuPage Inn on Ogden in Lisle is a bit of a distance from Villa Park, but they've got great burgers. Maybe someone else out there has tried their steaks?

Another option is Rayme's on Route 53 in Lisle - home of the king-sized cocktails (or that's what they advertise!)

John's Buffet in Winfield. Winfield Road and the UP tracks. Been there forever, perfectly matches your Owl/Schallers description.

It's been a few years, but if you're willing to drop down to Roosevelt, I think you'd probably be pleased with Jonathan's in Lombard. When I drove by yesterday it looked much as it did in the days when we were regulars, and is still advertising prime steaks.

    Jonathan's Restaurant
667 Roosevelt (between Finley and 355)
    Lombard

    708 627 3300

It gets a couple of nods in this thread about value steaks, including one just last month.

We've been to Johathan's numerous times and while the food is consistently good, I got the feeling that the poster was looking for something with a little more atmosphere. When I think of a bar/grill/tavern, I think of something a little more lively than Jonathan's Again, not saying there food isn't good.

I've heard that JT's Porch next door to Jonathan's is somehow related and that the meat is ordered together. That's definitely a bar/tavern atmosphere.

Country House was a good suggestion. Alfie's, about a mile west of Jonathan's on Roosevelt could also work.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're not familiar with Country House. Any more details and does anyone have an address?

Wow, I guess "near Villa Park" can have a lot of definitions!

Country House is in Lisle, south of Benedictine University.
    6460 College Road
    Lisle, IL
    (630) 983-0545
Again, a place I usually only get sandwiches or burgers. I don't think of this as near Villa Park...but ok.

I'm not an Alfie's fan but hords of Glen Ellyn-ites are. Speaking of Glen Ellyn, Shannon's is a favorite. On Main Street, just south of the tracks.
    428 N Main St
    Glen Ellyn, IL 60137
    (630) 790-9080

Less cozy and more chain-y is J Alexander's. It's off 16th, behind the strip mall with the Borders/Office Max/Container Store next to Oak Brook Mall.

My father likes the Italian style steaks at Vitorio's in Glen Ellyn. Cozy, family run, filling.

Alfie's really isn't up there on the list for me. I do suggest Country House for a good, stick-to-your-bones meal though!

Have tried Muldoon's a handful of times and it has never been a good experience. Alfie's rates much higher and has a much more loyal clientele than Muldoon's.... must be for a good reason!! I'd recommend at least giving Alfie's a try and decide for yourself!

    Hi there.

Another day for a good finding thanks to the lthforum. We were searching for something to have for lunch today in the Villa Park area (live in Elmhurst and were needing to run errands in VP) and I stumbled across this post. That led us to Country House in Clarendon Hills (other locations include Geneva and Lisle) for a very good burger and bloody mary, a Saturday lunch favorite for us. The burger was well cooked and the bloody was simple and had great flavor. While I don't think it was a good as say, Brandt's in Palatine, it instantly became our favorite place in this area to get a good lunch. Maybe we'll go for dinner someday as the rest of the menu looked very appetizing.

    Thanks again lthforum!!
