Was it inside the mall, or a standalone restaurant? (Lao Sze Chuan is at one entrance to Chinatown Square, an outdoor mall, sometimes called "Chinatown Mall".) That could help narrow it down.

It was our go-to spot for Dim Sum when I lived in Chicago, but I've never had dinner there. I would guess that they offer some Cantonese noodle dishes, though.

Its on their family menu, if you order enough dishes (I forget how many), you get a free entree or two.

Tried Happy Chef for lunch today, what a deal. It's now $4.39 but I can't think of a better bang for the buck situation. I had the chow fun with beef and green peppers in black bean sauce. Tasty; I don't know how you get chow fun to taste like they're grilled but they had a nice smoky edge. Bean sprouts were a nice touch. Huge too, I'm not even contemplating dinner tonight. Lunch specials seem to revolve either rice or noodle dishes understandbly. I'll have to try the dim sum next. Only drawback, those hideous plastic garbage bag tablecloths, and the service was completely abysmal. The food and price is enough to overcome both.

in my experience the chow fun noodles are cooked in a wok as well, which may be where you get the crispy/smoky flavor. haven't had them here though so don't know if it's a different flavor you refer to.
