Old Farts, Diners and Senior Discounts

My father-in-law is 83. He has all his wits about him. He drives a Polish Canoe, the 2001 Cadillac all over the NW side. He laments there's less and less places around our neighborhoods ( Portage and Jefferson Park and the 3 miles around here), that have senior citizen discounts. He doesn't want to go and hang out at a McDonald's in the morning sipping coffee.

If your grandfather asked you where would you send him to dine for breakfast lunch and dinner, where it's sit down service, and a darn good good deal, with lot's of other seniors hanging out there?

Example: Blue Angel on Milwaukee, used to have the "senior specials" where it was all inclusive...coffee, soup, salad, entree, dessert.....for a great price. Not anymore.

I am pretty sure that Sander's at Central and Touhy has good senior specials. The food is good too!

Sounds like my paternal grandfather Max, he met the boys every morning at the same Milwaukee, city not Ave, diner for decades. I'm sure there are many Alter Cocker joints scattered throughout the city, though I am a few decades shy of first hand knowledge.

I hear, and this is second hand, Kappy's on Dempster is a septuagenarian social scene, I might suggest that to him first. I've viewed tables of older gents chatting the morning away at Jack's on Touhy and though I have not been in years, have a recollection of Super Cup being a senior hang out as well. I do not know if any of these restaurants offer senior discounts.

I hope your father in-law finds a suitable spot, I know it was a very important part of my grandfathers day and probably kept him alive, happy and social an extra 5+ years.

Ironically, having lunch there today with my wife's 83 year old uncle.

Talking to my mothers neighbor Ralph yesterday. He swears by the new senior citizens center at the Norwood Park fieldhouse (just off Avondale, near Taft HS). Lots of old timers gather in the morning and the city puts out what Ralph claims to be a decent brekfast for $1.50.

I think part of gramp's delight is also getting "the best deal" when he goes out with buddies to dine. They found a 4.50 four course meal at Vince's on Harlem near Lawrence, for seniors. They have to sign up with Norridge or Harwood Heights and get some kind of ID card. I'm going to guess it's some kind of subsidized meal program.

Not a restaurant, but the A&G supermarket at Belmont and Central offers 10% off the grocery bill for seniors on Tuesdays.

Although anyone can go there and take advantage of their reasonably priced, made-from-scratch meals, they are specifically designed to be senior social centers and offer a variety of programs as well as food.
