    Hi,

Our next way-too-early breakfast is at Manny's Deli, which ReneG and Evil Ronnie have both mentioned their two poached eggs on corned beef hash for $4.95 as one terrific breakfast.

So far it is Sweet Willie and I, you are very welcome to join us or just drop in, at:

    Manny's Deli
    1141 South Jefferson Street
    Chicago, IL 60607
    312-939-2857

    See you there!

When, not so long ago, I mentioned Manny's corned beef hash, two poached (or other) eggs, plus bagel or bialy it was only $3.95, a remarkably good deal. Now as their online menu confirms it's gone up 25% to $4.95, still not too bad. The style of hash might not be to everyone's liking but I enjoy it. It's light and fluffy, not dense and crusty. The poached eggs are usually properly prepared.

I haven't been as happy with most of their other breakfasts--nothing bad, just ordinary and not inexpensive. I have yet to try their matzo brie and for those forgoing the hash it might be the thing to try (unfortunately I won't be able to on the 30th). Can anyone recommend or warn against it? It's very interesting to visit Manny's at 5am when it seems like a totally different restaurant, very quiet and relaxing especially if you're used to the usual lunchtime bustle.

Manny's CBH is among my favorite CBHs. It is different than most, as ReneG has mentioned, but that is one of the reasons I like it. In true Manny's tradition, they really pile it on the plate as well. I'm going to try to make it, but I can't guarantee I can pry my ass out of bed early enought to drive down there at that God-awful hour.

Damn. Out of town for the beefathon II and out of town for a Manny's breakfast. I've always had the eggs and CBH, too, but have always wondered how their salami and eggs would be.

Word to the wise for the Manny n00b - if you like hot sauce on your breakfast (and who doesnt? :P ) bring your own as the Manny's supplied sauce is pretty drab.

O.K., count me in. And I don't even eat breakfast. So, how're the grits?

Let's see: 2 at 1st WTEB (way to early breakfast), 4 at second. If we continue to follow the chowist rules of tummycell division we should have 8

Actually, this will be the 4th way too early breakfast. Pdaane went with me to a place on Pulaski and Elston. According to Peter there are a few diners in this stretch run by people who came from the Appalachia. I had biscuits and gravy with a side of Kentucky farm ham. Peter had fried potatoes, eggs over easy and coffee. I must admit the conversation was more interesting than the food: the differences in male and female brains. Specifically an almond shaped nob in the brain which causes memory to react differently under the stress of an argument. So the morning after an argument when the couple is conducting a post mortem: men recall the gist and women recall the details. Interesting stuff. A good conversation lifts a mediocre meal every time. In consideration of his company, I bought him a NYT's so he could read the food pages later.

Anyway, it amazes me anyone wants to come to these dead early breakfasts. We'll continue until summer runs out!

Had a great time with Cathy2, Psychchef and SteveZ this morning. The others all went for the CB hash with poached eggs, which I sampled and liked (my one bite) very much; I'll let them report on their own meals, though. I had a simple omelette and it was good, but I was there more for the company, which was stimulating (even at 5:15). At the end we all looked at our watches and had these curious looks on our faces; "It's 6:00 a.m. ... Now what? Am I late for something?"

I've been urged to set up another early breakfast in a couple of weeks; stay tuned.
