I am being whisked to the south suburbs tonight for dinner with friends. We have reservations at Restaurante Tenochtitlan on Western Avenue in Blue Island. Has anybody eaten there? I have enjoyed the few meals I've had at Real Tenochtitlan in Logan Square but can't find any evidence that the two restaurants are connected. Thanks for any tips on my southbound excursion.

I've been there two or three times. Small, but, very potent margaritas. Tacos, carne asada, guacamole, rice, beans are all good. Nothing earth shattering. Sometimes live entertainment, some times not. Noticed they serve carne en su jugo.

Mmmm...carne en su jugo. I will try their version and see if it stacks up against my favorite version at Tio Luis. Will report back on my findings.

Yesterday was my husband's birthday. I was looking for someplace new to take him for dinner. It had to be not too far from home since we both had to work today, and it had to be reasonably priced. I purchased a Groupon for this place a few weeks ago and thought last night was the perfect opportunity to use it.

The four of us walked into the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised when we were asked if we would prefer to sit inside or outside -- I was not aware that outside was an option, even though we opted for inside. Complimentary homemade tomatillo salsa was okay and I personally thought the chips were a little on the greasy side, but my family dove into them and ate the whole basket. We were asked if we wanted more, but we declined. The girls and I ordered horchatas to drink. They were good without being overly sweet.

My vegetarian daughter ordered potato flautas as an entree. I chose carne asada, my other daughter never orders anything but a steak burrito. The birthday boy ordered a skirt steak smothered in cheese, peppers and onions. We also ordered some tamales on the side, two with cheese and poblano peppers and two with pork.

The food arrived shortly. The tamales were great -- we will definitely be back for these. My skirt steak was a very generous portion and was tender and flavorful, cooked perfectly for my taste. It came garnished with tomatoes, lettuce, slices of cucumber and avocado. Refried beans were very tasty. The steak burrito was also good. My daughter usually brings half of her meal home for the next day -- she ate the whole thing at one sitting (of course, then she said she felt terrible because she overate, but it was still worth it). The birthday boy enjoyed his skirt steak -- a portion as big as mine with grilled poblano peppers and onions and cheese. I would order that on another visit.

The menu also has a large variety of seafood options. I plan to go back and try them soon. Prices are reasonable and someone who I assume was the owner was checking up on tables, asking if everything was all right. Service was good.

I was happy to find this place in the neighborhood and we will definitely eat there again and report back.
