Eating in Grocery Stores: Taqueria El Nuevo Mundo, Cicero
Every now and again, after I’ve had a truly awful meal (
http://lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4001), the vile sensation sticks with me for hours, through the next day, sometimes, and I have to eat something good, preferably in the same food family as the offending meal.
Trying to overcome the shock of last night's bad Mexican food, I drove over to El Nuevo Mundo for a quick lunch. Standing at the cafeteria-type counter, there was a lot I liked: bubbly red steak stew, nice looking tongue "medalliions," and promising tortas. I I ended up ordering some of the pork stew, and it was just right. Nice crusty chunks of pork in a salsa verde with beans, rice and salad ($5.50 – which is a great price considering I was served about a pound of stew). The stew was very, very juicy, which gave me something to do with the mountain of soft, fresh and highly sop-worthy tortillas I was given. I also enjoyed a big cup of fresh carrot juice ($2.00), which is something I don’t see often enough in Mexican restaurants.
Eating in a grocery store is fun – there’s more traffic and stuff to see, and everything moves at a brisk pace.
Any how, it worked: the stew was delicious, and it helped me forget the horror that was El Cid.
