had the lamb "plate of the day"
each day will be a different plate lunch depending on what the catering operation is doing.
very tasty leg of lamb with mashed potato and creamed spinach for $11.95.
corned beef and brats were as good as before
    as was the root beer.
    see you there

Hi El Panzone... yeah, that's me that owes you the beer, right? I may have to buy you one somewhere else, actually...

I went into 17/West today at lunch hour... I found it rather depressing and ended up just leaving without eating and/or drinking there.

I don't think I'll be back. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not feeling the love in that place... same goes for the downstairs cafe... **sigh**

(Of course, there's lots more info on the 17/West reopening and so forth at The Berghoff Memorial Blog... http://berghoffmemorial.blogspot.com/

...but hardly anywhere else... I've seen no press coverage or mention of it on The Berghoff or Artistic Events websites. Weird.)

Got to admit, I love the randomness of that. Whatever someone else has ordered for their office party is what you're getting.

It’s all part of the new “Tradition with a Twist” regime, like Chicken Schnitzel Satay (unfortunately I’m not making that up).

There's a new 17/West website now online... and it ain't pretty, as far as I'm concerned...

Also, there is a curious "Media Q & A" section on there that actually raises more questions than it answers...

the scoop, of course, is at The Berghoff Memorial Blog...

Chicken Schnitzel Satay??? Is that a felony or a misdemeanor? Someone just spend at least one night in the pokey for that.

I'm in charge of planning my company's Christmas party this year, and I thought of the Berghoff as an option, but I haven't been since they closed and reopened. Has anyone been there lately? How similar is the current incarnation of the Berghoff to the original? (And is it any good?)

there was a yelp party there a few weeks ago. the upstairs room fit a few hundred nicely.

the food was good too. they just served brats and various desserts, but the 'kraut they put on it was some of the best sauerkraut i've ever tasted...

I haven't been to the Berghoff since they reopened. I'm wondering if they still sell fish sandwiches in the standup bar(if it is still there?) on Fridays? If you have had one lately, are they like they used to be? I'm going downtown tomorrow and would love to score a couple of fish sammies if they are still available.

Yes, they sell them upstairs (they added more tables and took space from the restaurant) as well as downstairs in the cafeteriastyle restaurant. The fish is the same as before -- meaning hit-or-miss. Some days it's just okay, on others it's great.

    just fyi

So can someone fill in the story?

Yes they sell the halibut sandwiches in the stand-up bar and when they're fresh they're great...

I'm not sure that this is completely true, but a friend who works for the city told me that they changed the name - and did a few other things - to avoid landmark status for the building....

The stand-up bar is still there, but the room has been modified and expanded (the room has been opened up to add more seating). It feels familiar but is different.

Further explanation: I'm trying to find out if they still have the line where you can choose what kind of sandwich you want? I don't want to have to sit down to eat, I want to take it out.

The fish is halibut now? The last time I was there they had choice of cod or pollock.

Yes they have the line and yes you can get it "to go". 'Twas halibut last week. YMMV

Was always halibut when I used to go - starting about 25 years ago - but I've never been since Caroline did her thing. Std routine was for a couple of us to grab some space at the bar (or one of the two tables in the north corner) and order a round of steins of dark while the rest went through the line and picked up halibut sandwiches and hardboiled eggs. Borrow the tabasco (this was before I started carrying my own hot sauce around) from the bar and the perfect beginning to a lost afternoon was made.

"the room has been opened up to add more seating"

Sheesh. Stand up bar. More seating. This place used to be so cool, Caroline what have you done?

Do they still have the old photos of the crowds from the day "Prop 18" was repealed? Friends I would bring for the first time always got a real kick out of those photos and Liquor License #1.

I picked up 3 fish sandwiches today. They were good, but $10.25 each seems a bit much. My crave is cured for awhile.
