MY Panini in Evanston

I happened upon this place while making a trip to the post office on Davis just west of downtown Evanston. I was initially attracted by their great-looking old facade, which reminds me of an old drugstore, with it's inlaid marble signage. Beautiful.

I can't tell if this place is new or not. Seems like it. Menu is your basic mix of toasty panini sandwiches, a few salads, soup, and dessert paninis like nutella-banana. They do breakfast sandwiches and have a coffee setup featuring intelligencia.

I had a double espresso and it was, considering downtown Evanston's current shortage of quality coffee, probably the best this area has to offer. I was happy enough with the coffee (beans were ground after I ordered it) that I'm encouraged that the quality level of the food could be high as well.

Haven't been there yet, but I can confirm it's new - probably within the last month. Space used to be Wild Tree Café.

The building was indeed a pharmacy in its earlier days.

Just half a data point:

I had to go to the post office, so I stopped into My Panini across the way. The Greek Salad was one of the most overdressed salads I've had in a long time. Lettuce, cucumbers, feta, olives, tomatoes and red onion were plentiful but drenched in dressing. The sad part was that the salad contained large chunks of what I think were very good tomatoes, but all I could taste was oil and vinegar.



Service was gruff. I'm not usually one to be intimidated, but I thought the woman behind the counter might warm up more if I ordered something else besides salad, so I got a too-sweet lemonade, of which I drank half. Yup, I felt quasi-bullied into ordering juice. It probably didn't help that I first asked what the soup of the day was--I'm probably the only person in Evanston curious about soup when the world is melting outside. The answer I got set the tone for the entire exchange: "No soup."

I might go back to My Panini, but I'd bring a friend.
