bibi rose and I commented in this thread and here. I've been back since and can report some improvement, but the food is still not this place's strength. If you go, the kalua pork may not be authentic (I suspect their recipe owes a lot to liquid smoke), but it's one of the best things on the menu.

The people are very nice, the decor is adorable, and the music is good.

Just wanted to report that Aloha Grill has kim chee available. It's an add-on item for $1.95/portion.

IMHO, it goes really well with a lot of the plate lunches.

It's in a test phase right now to see if they'll be able to sell enough of it to make it work.

Anyone been here lately? Is it still good?

I wanted to get an idea of dinner prices, but looking at their menu, it all says lunch, but they're open until 10pm. Are dinner prices listed somewhere?

Also, just an update to an earlier post- Tiki Terrace is no longer located in Prospect Heights. It's now at Oakton & Lee in Des Plaines.

Same menu all day. I'm not sure what you're expecting but it's closer to a fast food restaurant than a proper sit down restaurant in terms of set-up (order at the register, pay, and then your food comes out...there's no table service). I go somewhat regularly and everything still seems good to me. In addition to the printed menu there is a specials board that usually has a couple of interesting things on it.

And don't let the word "lunch" throw you. The portions are massive...they serve mini versions of many of the dishes, and even those can be too much for one person's lunch

At this place, you might like the food or you might not, but price and size will never be an issue.

Plate lunch is the style which means that you get two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad with the entrée. It's sort of like a Styrofoam bento box.

I went three months ago, and my pork tonkatsu was not as good as I remembered it on previous visits. The pork was super thin so through the breading and frying process, it was very dry and tough. Spam masubi was still good though!

I just had Aloha Grill for dinner last night. I really like the place and the quality is as strong as it was when I first tried it a few years ago. The chicken plate with a side of kimchi remains fantastic.

I had tofu katsu curry, which was nicely fried, but I wasn't crazy about the curry sauce. It had a cinnamon-like flavor to it. I'm normally open to new flavors, but when I have a plate lunch, I want it to taste like the local food I grew up with. Next time, I'll have the plain tofu katsu and test out their katsu sauce.

They have the macaroni salad right on, and it's fun that they have local canned drinks and Spam musubi (even though I don't eat meat these days, it's nice to see it there). What they really should get, if they don't already have it, is Portuguese sausage. I don't know what the "real" Portuguese name is, but it's always just Portuguese sausage in Hawaii. Oh, and for anyone who wants to make their own Spam musubi--you don't have to go through the trouble of making sushi rice--plain sticky rice will do, and that's the most common way in Hawaii. Some people put furikake (seaweed rice seasoning) in it to jazz it up.

I'd be excited if they had lomi salmon or poke (or fried poke--mmmm). Yum! Maybe some kim chee too. And no plate lunch place should be without its own version of beef stew! My mouth is watering!

Five years on, they have house kim chee, Portuguese sausage, and occasionally (or by request with notice) lomi salmon, along with Spam by the slice, haupia, and still the decent Miracle Whip mac salad, the only acceptable application of that base substance for my taste. I still have never seen or asked about poke. I like the place and laid-back, positive staff, and really dig the barbecue beef and distinctive homemade sauces and gravies. They need to get a Puka Dog mobile and they'd make a killing.

They'll be on vacation in mid-September - call before visiting.
