A quick call confirms this. Their message says something like "we regret to inform you that we are now closed. Thank you...." and so on. Well, at least I got in once. It's a shame, though not surprising. The food was very good but that's a terrible location for a site that nice and prices in that range. I'm really going to miss those popovers.
It's proof that location is everything. Take that same restaurant and put it on Southport between Grace and Addison, and it would have been full on the weekends rather than a place you could walk into as a decent, but not amazing, place for a dinner if you're in the area. Still, we'll miss their fresh pasta and the idea of a galeteria (although their spiced lamb was usually worth the trip from Streeterville IMHO). Or maybe it's just the vibe that Georges and Maria gave to the place, before their ill-fated attempt to expand to River North.
We were there about 10 days ago, and Maria had hinted that if they didn't find a buyer for the location, they were closing imminently. It sounded like a combination of burn-out and the business level in Edgebrook. One thing she did talk about was maybe selling their marinades for their meat commercially, but she was uncertain how feasible that was as a start-up.
Maybe it's just me, but it's been a brutal year for our favorite establishments. So far, we've lost:
Venus (just for being something other than anonymous Greek, and having Dakos salad), and Costas the year before
Al Primo Canto
La Sera Cafe (my go-to alternative to Starbucks on weekend afternoons when I'm flying solo)
Bistro 110 (the Bistro chicken was great when you wanted low-carb sides and 1/2 chicken)
Of course, I still miss The Helmand and Distant Mirror from the relatively distant past of our pre-child, dating life. But that belongs on the "gone, but not forgotten" thread.
