I haven't seen it mentioned but Curried opened recently at 171 N. Wells.
Plates are 1 veg & 1 meat selection with rice and nann - $7.99
Bowls are 1 selection over rice - $5.99

I tried the steak vindaloo (odd I thought).
The best I can say is it didn't suck.

They've been open for a few months. I'm a pretty big fan. The steak vindaloo is not my favorite, but the veggie dishes are delicious and their chicken stuff is nice too. I've also heard great things about the pizza, but haven't tried it yet.

Pupuseria Restaurant Cuscatleco #2 on Clark St. just south of Touhy is papered over with a sign announcing Nueva Italy Pizzeria. Hopefully it will be good, the 'hood could use a decent pizza option.

Also, I don't know if it has already been mentioned, but Fina Estampa has opened a second location in Rogers Park.

Looks like a new craft beer and whiskey bar has opened in Lincoln Park.

Not trying to be a noodge, but I think that's in Belmont Cragin, not Hermosa.

    I'm stoked.

They need to build North, not South! I'm tired of running all the way to Montrose for my chicken fix from my place in Rogers Park....!

It appears (via Groupon message) that Al Primo Canto (5414 West Devon Avenue, Chicago) has ceased operations.

A quick call confirms this. Their message says something like "we regret to inform you that we are now closed. Thank you...." and so on. Well, at least I got in once. It's a shame, though not surprising. The food was very good but that's a terrible location for a site that nice and prices in that range. I'm really going to miss those popovers.

It's an area that screams out for a great family restaurant and this was not a good fit. However, it outlasted my original pessimistic projection by quite a bit.

Magnolia Bakery readies Chicago debut. The chain made famous by the TV series “Sex in the City” plans to open Oct. 1 at 108 N. State St., in the Block 37 shopping center. The Loop shop will be the bakery's eighth location, following expansion to Los Angeles and Dubai. It first opened in Greenwich Village in 1996.

It's proof that location is everything. Take that same restaurant and put it on Southport between Grace and Addison, and it would have been full on the weekends rather than a place you could walk into as a decent, but not amazing, place for a dinner if you're in the area. Still, we'll miss their fresh pasta and the idea of a galeteria (although their spiced lamb was usually worth the trip from Streeterville IMHO). Or maybe it's just the vibe that Georges and Maria gave to the place, before their ill-fated attempt to expand to River North.

We were there about 10 days ago, and Maria had hinted that if they didn't find a buyer for the location, they were closing imminently. It sounded like a combination of burn-out and the business level in Edgebrook. One thing she did talk about was maybe selling their marinades for their meat commercially, but she was uncertain how feasible that was as a start-up.

Maybe it's just me, but it's been a brutal year for our favorite establishments. So far, we've lost:
Venus (just for being something other than anonymous Greek, and having Dakos salad), and Costas the year before
    Al Primo Canto
La Sera Cafe (my go-to alternative to Starbucks on weekend afternoons when I'm flying solo)
Bistro 110 (the Bistro chicken was great when you wanted low-carb sides and 1/2 chicken)

Of course, I still miss The Helmand and Distant Mirror from the relatively distant past of our pre-child, dating life. But that belongs on the "gone, but not forgotten" thread.

Ah, The Distant Mirror, a past favorite from my dinner-and-a-movie at the 400 days.

There was a report on WBBM radio last Friday. Supposedly closing due to the combination of a poor economy and the current owner's health situation.

One need they filled was that they were a place where, if you ordered a turkey sandwich, you got actual turkey on your sandwich. Not processed turkey with water and sodium added, but pieces of turkey actually carved off a turkey. Not everything they offered was great, but this was one thing they offered that made them special.

The Tribune is reporting the closing of Leo's Coney Island:

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/ ... 2786.story

    From the article:

"The announcement on the chain’s website pretty much summed it up: 'We are sad to announce that effective Wed, September 28, 2011 Leo’s Coney Island will permanently close its doors and cease operations in Chicago. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over these last 20 months.'"
