I am taking 7 very diverse people out to dinner Sunday, all from North Carolina. 3 are very adventurous, but unfortunately 4 aren't. In fact, they think tapas restaurants are a little too crazy. I would like to go someplace that is Chicago, and was thinking Farmhouse Tavern or Scoozi which isn't a Chicago experience. Budget is tight, but not as in eating at Portillo's ;) so if anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. We have an "event" on Monday at Gino's for pizza and beer for 150 people on Monday.....thanks!

If it weren't for the budget constraint, I'd suggest North Pond. Its location in the middle of the park is uniquely Chicago. In addition to Sunday dinner, they're also open for brunch on Sundays, which would be less expensive than dinner. Otherwise...

I'd take them to one of our provincial Mexican restaurants - Mundial Cocina Mestiza in Pilsen, Mexique in West Town, or Mixteco Grill in Lakeview. All have Mexican food like they've never seen in North Carolina, with a few dishes that are "mainstream" enough to satisfy the non-adventurous. (Bayless's restaurants are closed Sundays.)

But if Mexican is too exotic ( ), I'd probably take them to Quartino, or maybe Sable.

A few places come to mind that might fit the Chicago versus Chicago experience idea and are downtown.

Any of the Rosebud's might do you -- I would personally prefer Carmine's on Rush because its got a sort of nice Frank Sinatra-y vibe. I also thought of Club Lago, which I admit I've never been to, but might do what you want it to do.

You also might think about The Berghoff.

    Have fun!

That would otherwise be a great idea, but it's closed on Sundays.

Going with Quartino. It's safe enough for the very bland folks, and fun enough for me ;-) Thanks!
