I am going out for Thai with a vegetarian couple this weekend. We are planning on going to Spoon, (I have never been). Can anyone speak to the "veggie-friendliness" of Spoon? Are any dishes highly recommended for non-carnivores?

(Don't worry, they're not so squeamish that they won't let me eat a Thai Fried Chicken in front of them.)

Is this vegetarianism in the sense that seafood does not count as meat? If so, I should think you can find many things.

One dish that I really love, that is total veg (although not vegan) is the preserved egg salad. Another dish I love, which is not veg at all, but might work depeneding on how sensative your friend is, is the greens with the crispy pork--the crispy pork is easy to move aside. Of course you can just get the greens w/o the pork, but that would be no fun...

Thanks, Cathy. I am aware of the menu. I was looking for any specific recs. Many times the menu descriptions will not indicate if items are cooked with bits of pork or mini shrimp, etc.

Thanks for the rec. They are not vegans and at least one of the two will be willing to push aside the pork.

I expect I'm in the extreme minority here, but I have found that I enjoy dishes such as the Papaya salad, the "healthy soup," the banana blossom salad, the pork neck larb, and things of this nature (off the beaten menu type selections) at Spoon more than any other Thai place in chicago, BUT i think that next door's Opart Thai does your typical Thai (pad woonsen, gaeng curry, spicy basil chicken) much better than Spoon.

Spoon's pretty high on my list of Thai places in Chicago - I don't think you're in the minority for liking it.

No, Spoon Thai is fantastic. What I meant by being in the minority was that I feel that Opart does tradtional (in the, from what I can gather, having not been to Thailand, American sense) Thai better than Spoon, in my opinion. As in, the dishes that would perhaps be ordered by a non-chowish person.

Not only do we have the address, but various translations of their Thai language menus. Just check out the second post in the linked thread, under Translated Menus on the Useful Stuff board. Be sure to let us know what you think!

    Cheers,
