I’m breaking this off the main Kabul House thread because KHE is its own place. The menu is small, but there are some items unique to it. The bolani are described as Afghan turnovers on the menu but really are like large stuffed (potato, leek/scallion, or pumpkin) naan. Served with a yogurt-mint dipping sauce, they are delicious and quite filling. I especially love the kadu (pumpkin). The dinner plates come with a very generous helping of KH’s excellent Afghan rice flavored with carrot shreds and raisins, along with a small cuke and onion salad dressed well with lots of cilantro. The other little side included is a tasty spicy potato-chickpea stew. The dinners are similar if not identical to some at the main restaurant, mostly various grilled kabobs and meats, all very well-seasoned and cooked. I haven’t had the sandwiches, but our son reports they are good.

If you want a bit of a change from the Indian/Pakistani restaurants on Devon, KHE is a nice option. For those of us in the neighborhood, it’s very good take-out. The $4 bolani are a great snack. It is interesting to compare the Afghan breads and meats at KHE to the Pakistani tandoor meats and naans at Khan’s a few blocks west to get some sense of the similarities and differences between the cuisines of these neighboring countries.
