Trifecta Grill in Winnetka

Dinner tonight at the Trifecta Grill, in Winnetka, was a total pleasure. The setting, the menu, the food and drinks, the waitstaff and the management all contributed to the kind of restaurant experience that brings you back until you have tried everything they have to offer.

The outdoor patio is comfortably away from the street and warmed by a few gas heaters. They do not take reservations for parties of fewer than six people, but we were warmly greeted and seated immediately, arriving at ~6:00 pm on a Friday night. Service was quick and attentive, with very pleasant staff members offering excellent suggestions when we had trouble narrowing down our choices.

Trifecta has the feel of an informal, moderately upscale neighborhood restaurant. The menu offers small plates and big plates of entrees, with salads, pizzas, sandwiches and sides. Everything that we had was well executed and interesting. There were three special items to supplement the regular menu, which is available online and provides insights into the creativity of the kitchen.

Grazers and first-timers will appreciate the Trifecta Concept as applied to combo servings. For example, a dozen cheeses were offered in a 3-item (or 5-item) grouping of your choosing. Three of the entrée items (ceviche; tilapia taco; chipotle chicken lollipop) can be ordered as the Trifecta Trio. Three of their meat sandwiches (lamb; beef; short ribs) can be ordered as a Slider City entrée. For French-fry lovers who appreciate variety, they offer Tri Fries – three kinds of potato (russet; purple Peruvian; sweet) with three types of aioli (basil pesto; roasted garlic; spicy Asian) You can even sample three of their desserts in the Sweet Trio.

And the Gimlet was grand. We will be back.
