Koi in Evanston is just starting to serve dim sum at noon. We were at the soft opening today, and sampled about 13 dishes including excellent shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, steamed ribs, stuffed tofu skin rolls (vegetarian and with pork), jalapenos stuffed with seafood, shrimp toast, sticky rice with chinese sausage, crispy dumplings and crispy taro balls, sugar cane cake, black sesame balls and red bean sesame balls. the stuffed tofu skin rolls and the jalapenos were particularly notable: they have 33 different dishes on weekdays, almost twice as many on weekends. If the quality stays the same, this will notably contribute to Evanston's culinary offerings, especially since it coincides with the opening of Lao Sze Chuan. Dim sum prices range from $3.50 to $5, though most are $4 or $4.50. I definitely plan to go back and sample some of the other dim sum, including curry baby octopus and chive or cilantro shrimp dumplings. If I can find someone brave enough to share, beef tripe with ginger and onions or pork stomach with satay sauce sound appealing (to me, at least), and suggest that not everything on the menu is dumbed down.

Among the Evanston Lunch Group™, shouldn't be a problem...
