Our bouillabaisse dinner last Sunday was held at Dave's Specialty Foods, which is normally closed on Sundays and therefore available for a private party. A few folks decided while there, based on the evidence of hand-written menus and a refrigerator full of cheese, that Dave's might be worth checking out in its own right -- not just as a venue for a visiting chef.

Today, a friend and I followed up on that idea and had lunch at Dave's. Dandy place for lunch. My polenta cake was fabulous -- rich, cream, with a bit of spinach and tomato on top. My friend almost fainted with delight when he bit into his pulled pork sandwich, and said the macaroni was beautiful and creamy. I tasted the bread pudding he got for dessert, and we both agreed that it was amazing, dotted with chocolate bits and soaked in booze.

Very casual place -- plastic forks and spoons, only a few tables, including a long one in the center that disparate groups share -- but better than usual food on offer. There is also a nice selection of cheeses for carry out.

So not a place for a grand meal to impress someone, but a great place for some quick, delicious comfort food in the middle of the day.
