I'm going to Cafe Iberico with a group tonight. Any must-haves?

If you like octopus, their "pulpo a la plancha" (sp?) is very good, a big portion of nice chunks of tender grilled octopus with french fries. My friends who like blood sausage like the morcilla very much, and I can vouch for the regular (non-blood) sausage plate as well. For dessert the crema catalana with rasberries is great, and there is also a delicious cooked banana with ice cream, although I can't remember the name. (It's better than it sounds.)

If you haven't been there before, be warned: the wait for a table can be a little long, although once you're seated the food usually comes very quickly. My advice would be to order a few plates at a time, so that you can judge how hungry you are, and also so that if you really like something, you can order a second round!

    My favorite cold tapas:

    tuna canneloni
    potatoes with garlic mayo
    jamon iberico

    hot:

    patatas bravas
    ham croquettes
beef tenderloin skewer with carmelized onions and fried potatoes
    queso de cabra

I don't think the desserts are anything to scream about.

Boy did the Food Nut, nail it. I have been going to Iberico since they opened, and my favs, are the same as Food Nut's. Be sure to try several of the Sherry's.

Oh, and I usually get the hot dish with sauteed mushrooms, too. It is called:

    CHAMPIÑONES A LA PLANCHA

Thanks for the recos! One of my girlfriends had been there often and had several of the same favorites.

    We had:
    queso de cabra - favorite
    smoked salmon
grilled shrimp - 2nd time I've had it - both times overcooked
    ham croquettes
chicken skewers/beef skewers, both w/ carmelized onions and saffron rice - onions and rice best part of both dishes
    patatas bravas - yumm!
scallops with saffron rice - also excellent
octopus - my friends were leery of trying this, but it ended up being our favorite behind the queso de cabra

Have to agree - we got the fried banana with ice scream. The banana didn't have much flavor and was actually kind of chewy.

The banana and the shrimp were the only things we were disappointed in (and the shrimp just slightly because we could dip the bread into the sauce). All in all it was a great and inexpensive meal. We were stuffed on 9 tapas and a pitcher of sangria and our tab was only $72!

Sorry I'm late, but for future reference...

    Spanish omelette (tortilla)
    Tuna cannelloni
Cold potato salad with garlic mayo
    Chorizo plate
    Grilled garlic mushrooms
Baked goat cheese with tomato and basil
    Patatas bravas
    Grilled squid

And the chocolate flan... mmm.... chocolate flan.

We went last night for the first time ever to this venerable Chicago restaurant, and were very well pleased. The garlic-mayo potato salad was to die for (literally--I could have eaten entire plattersful of it all by myself, and probably died). I'll add one item to all of the above recommendations: the dates wrapped in ham. Perfection.

The big room was bustling (especially for a Sunday night) but our party of five walk-ins was able to get one of the remaining tables without a wait. Service was excellent.

This was one of those "where have you been all my life" experiences. Except, actually, since the place has been around since 1992, it's more like "where I have been all your life?"
