We are planning a shower for my future sister-in-law. It will be for about 20 people. We would like a private room. I am familiar with the hotels downtown that do tea but would like to try something different and possibly less costly then like the Drake or Peninsula. Any suggestions.

You might want to try the Tea Map (http://www.teamap.com).

Unique So Chique, at the corner of Wilson and Magnolia, does a good high tea. You wouldn't confuse it with the big hotel tearooms (the interior is cozy, not grand, there is no live music, and you won't feel like you've stepped into a Wodehouse or Delafield novel, but all the funny characters are elsewhere, leaving you are stuck with the aristocratic bullies and the maiden aunts ... who disapprove of you in vague and unsettling ways).

UsC offers a variety of teas --- black, herbal, green, and white; the service is good; and the tea has the traditional mix of sweet and savory, with good scones, sandwiches, and pastries. Prices are much lower than the hotels but, as mentioned above, the experience is different. The tea is served in a room in the back of a small shop, so it meets your private room requirement.

You do have to get past the goofy name, and get up to Uptown, but I think UsC would do a good party for you.

    Hi Paulette,

This thread should provide you some ideas. Read to the end because it is occasionally updated as places close or open.

Aion Tea Center which is mentioned in the cited thread has closed. Too bad. It would have been a good place for the shower.

    Hi Paulette,
Would you be interested in hosting your shower at an art gallery?

We're moving our gallery back to River North on January 1st - so if it is after that - we might have the spot for you. Perfect for 20. It is located at 215 W. Huron - right next to Allen's. We can cater for you on-site, or your could bring in someone. Pricing very inexpensive and this could be a unique spot for the shower.

Give me a call if you're interested. Portia Belloc Lowndes 312.320.4145
