Thanks for the report on the long-awaited Gabutto Stuffed Pancake. The pancakes are a little different than I envisioned (for that matter so is the burger). Did you see them being prepared? Are they made from batter poured into a waffle-maker-like device? I'm happy to see they brand the pancakes as well as the burger buns.

In this week's Chicago Reader Mike Sula wrote:He's recently added another, more purely Japanese item to the menu: obanyaki, pancakes stuffed with sweet red bean paste or custard cream. And if those take off he'll be adding chocolate cream and green tea flavors.

Gabutto Burger has gotten plenty of attention recently. In addition to Sula's article (linked to above), GB is featured in Episode 9 of Kevin Pang's Cheeseburger Show.

To each his own, I guess, but we ate at Gabutto burger, and really enjoyed the teriyaki egg burger-
the egg and burger and sauce combined in a really nice warm rich, sweet way.
I also got a kick out of the branded bun, which kind of reminded me of a challah roll-

I would definitely hit this place again, and I doubt I could keep the kids away...
    egg burger...yum....

The burgers are a little small for me but I love them!

From the ridges on the edges of the pancakes I assume they were made in some kind of waffle maker sort of thing, or perhaps a cast iron mold where each side is placed on the griddler?

Good news about the new flavors, I'd like to see something like Strawberry or Cherry filling.

    Hi,

Finally had an opportunity to try the Stuffed Pancake at the Gabutto Burger stall at Mitsuwa:

    Image

The pancake is available stuffed with red bean paste and three flavored custards to choose from: green tea, vanilla and chocolate. I selected the vanilla as the least likely to dislike. The vanilla cream was light on sugar, which many favor though I prefer more sweetness. The pancake was not sweet. Cream by itself was passable. Cream with pancake was not satisfying. The unsweet almost neutral pancake nulled the effect of the not-too-sweet cream to sweeten it. I'm one who expects dessert to be sweet, not neutral.

No idea how this was made, because the stuffed pancake was already finished and kept warm. The top and bottom had a crisp pancake quality from being griddled. The sides encapsulating the cream are thinner and don't have any hardened skin from the griddle.

I was glad to try it for my own edification, though I won't be moving mountains to try another.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I, too, had the opportunity to try the stuffed pancakes recently (red bean flavour). I guess I wasn't paying attention to this thread, but I had really hoped that "stuffed pancake" was a codeword for okonomiyaki. Too bad.

In any case, I was very happy to find that they were NOT stingy with the red bean filling. I enjoyed the little bugger. The filling was not too sweet so you could really taste the adzuki (I hate it when they're too sweet). For a little over a buck, I will definitely try the other flavours the next time I'm at Mitsuwa.

not sure if this violates LTH's "unverified source" policy, but i heard it was a lease dispute with mitsuwa.

    they are kickstarting, FYI:
