I generally don’t care much for nachos, usually too much salt and too much bad cheese among other crimes. But late one night when I saw La Pasadita’s new menu item, chachos, somehow I couldn’t resist.
Chachos According to La Pasadita
Essentially chachos are nachos topped with “a half pound of steak.” That’s clearly an underestimate—this is one huge plate of food. I kept eating away at it but the pile seemed hardly to diminish (reminiscent of The Slinger). About halfway through I admitted defeat since I had a torta milanesa waiting in the wings. Still, pretty good for what it is. Good beans, admirable restraint with the cheese, decent guacamole, and La Pasadita’s usual excellent carne asada. Also I’m fond of their salsa negra, made from charred jalapeños. I doubt I’ll order chachos too often but there were times in my life I might have traded my soul for a plate of this.
There are three La Pasaditas, all in the 1100 block of N Ashland, and each has a somewhat different menu. If all you want is a taco de carne asada—their best offering—go to the little yellow one on the east side of Ashland.
The Enigma of La Pasadita-ville
I believe chachos are only offered at the southernmost restaurant, 1132 N Ashland ($4.95 if you eat there, $2 more for take out). It’s open quite late, until 3 am, maybe the perfect time for a plate of chachos.
