My friends wanted me to try a place they recently found way up in Grass Lake near Antioch. It's a seasonal place located right by the inlets to Grass Lake open from April/May until late October called Grass Lake Landing. It felt like I was in a sports bar in Wisconsin or Michigan, so you get the vibe. Wood tables and chairs, big, long wood bar, giant outdoor deck, neon beer signs, a bunch of big screens for sports. I was very impressed with the food. We shared an order of onion rings, but it was more like a platter of enormous batter dipped rings that were among the best I've ever had (and I don't prefer the bigger size rings, but these were great). They had a half price pizza special, so we ordered one to share as well. Truly super thin crust with a floured bottom, had a nice flavor to it, great sausage and nice sauce. Very impressed. My friend and I got their Italian Beef which is made with prime rib on a hoagie roll (lightly toasted), pepper jack (optional) with hot giardineira, a side of Italian beef jus and excellent house made chips. Great sandwich. The staff were friendly and kept asking/making sure everything was ok. They said a lot of their menu is made in house which is refreshing. They even have three different batters for onion rings, chicken tenders and fish. They close October 24th, but surprise - most of their menu is available at their sister restaurant which is open all year called Fogcutter in Lake Villa, so I'll be checking them out as well (plus it's closer to me).

I have been to Grass Lake Landing a few times. My family owns a summer home on a lake nearby so we have gone over a few times on the boat. It is one of the best options on the chain. I prefer it to Blarney's Island and Steitz's by far. The food was good, the selection of beers was good, it was quiet and clean. Normal pub grub and good service. I recommend it.

We used to spend months working over a bonne-femme sauce, trying to determine just the right proportions of paprika and fresh forest mushrooms to use." -Karoly Gundel, Blue Trout and Black Truffles: The Peregrinations of an Epicure, Joseph Wechsberg, 1954.
