Discovered 2 very good places yesterday:
M&A Polish Deli on Belmont at Harlem. Tiny polish deli with breads, teas, chocolates, all the usual eastern european pickeled goods as well as hot and cold food. They have the tasy carrot, beet and vegetable slaw-like salads, sausages, salamis and hot foods. I also bought a salami labeled "wegirskie" - it is very tasty. A bit garlicky, fairly lean, but delicious. I also bought this desert item, I don't know what its called, but its a thin, soft waffle-like tube with a light creamy filling. Fantastic. i didn't get to try the hot foods, they had mushrooms, saurkraut, breaded pork i think, pierogies. They also had soups. Service was very nice.
While in line at Johnnies once, someone recommended the Italian Beef at Mr D's Shishkebab, on Diversey just east of Oak park ave. Had it yesterday. i can only compare it to johnnies - it was very very good. it was fairly large, the beef was tender, peppery, a bit spicier than Johnnies. It comes with fantastic fresh cut fries. You can eat in, there are a few tables, and the atmosphere is Gene and Judes-like. I will be back to both places.

Arghhh, Mr. D's is one of my secret places :D

Actually I did mention them once when the discussion of the best fries came up. I've been going there for 15 years but I've only had the beef once or twice. But that's mainly because I love the shish-ka-bob.

But it's nothing like what normal people call a shish-ka-bob. It's meat and onions, and that's it. And it's served on a roll, with tomatos on top. It's very plain. But the meat is marinaded and it's simply delicious.

The rib-eye also seems to be a favorite there since I see many people order it. But plenty of people just order burgers and hot dogs.

Needless to say, don't go there for the ambiance. And yes, they do have a few tables and chairs, but very few. At lunch time it gets very busy and the odds of getting a table are pretty slim.

    LO:

Thanks for the tip. I've noticed this place but it's always while I'm going to or from Riviera, which is quite nearby. Anyway, with most of my brain focussed on sopressata and such, I never got around to stopping in. Now I know I should.
