Savory Crust, a new empanada place in Morton Grove (same strip mall as Tava, just across from Kappy's) opened last week. Stopped in yesterday. Similar set-up to 5411 in that they have ready made empanadas on trays in a holding oven. Individual empanadas are $4-$5 including one sauce; custom empanadas are "coming soon." Purchased several. The standout was Argentinian beef. Curry chicken was also good. Chicken pot pie and pot roast were fine but not as good. Biggest negative is the crust. It's very good but has a tendency to overpower with the less-pronounced flavors of some fillings. The crust-to-filling ratio is also off. Just a bit too dense for my taste as opposed to 5411's offerings. While they're somewhat more substantial than 5411, the heaviness works against them. 1 may be fine for a quick lunch but if you're hungry enough for 2, the one-note crust flavor and the denseness of the pastry work against you. I will definitely return, but it's not quite the place I was hoping for.
