Yes the name of the bakery is Amazing Breads and Cakes.

I hadn't had a croissant in awhile and this place makes their own from scratch which is quite the ordeal when done right, really enjoyed this.

Plenty of breads & other baked goods to try, all made from scratch and if I understood correctly made with local grains.

I've personally appreciated the restraint of sugar in the items I've had, the items weren't overly sweet.

I am a weekend regular here as my son takes karate down the street and I have to agree with you on all accounts (including the name :D ).

There is always a great variety of pastries, breads, and breakfast items (breakfast pizza, muffins, coffee cake etc.) and on the weekends they occasionally do perogies which are awesome. I noticed the same restraint in sugar on my first visit here and it was refreshing. When you look at the desserts they seem like you would be beat over the head with sweetness like most however there is a noticeable lack of sugar. Because of this some of them are not a hit with my kids but I have yet to have something there that I have not enjoyed.

    Usual favorites:
    -chocolate croissants
    -peach and goat cheese tart
    -chocolate brownies
    -sourdough bread (amazing!)
    -double chocolate tart
    -breakfast pizza

I am not certain you would notice the spot unless you were looking for it, but it is definitely worth a visit. There is a patio area and a small number of seating inside to enjoy your pastry/coffee/etc.

For those familiar with the area by sight, but not certain about the address, it's across the street, to the west, from the Des Plaines theater. The shop used to sell popcorn, candy, and Italian Ice.

I noticed the change several months ago but haven't stopped in. Now I need to check them out. Thanks.

Stopped in to surprise my coworkers this am (well, more to make up for me sauntering in late,) but -

I bought a mixed box of pastries, a bunch of them. The coworkers were all impressed by the less sweet / sugar restraint, and I was too. My, and a few others' complaint is the lack of...butter. One of the coworkers called this "European Style." The cinnamon rolls looked great, but they were light and airy, not buttery and dense. Now, that might be fine and dandy, and even preferred by some, and that's fine. That's not what I go to a bakery for, and I might be in the minority, and I freely admit that I might be a rube when it comes to bakeries.

Little disappointed, but only because it was not what I wanted for my bakery dollar. Not their fault, and I would recommend this place if you are looking for that lighter style of pastry. If you want heavy, dense, buttery, artery cloggin pastries, this might not be your joint, and they are not trying to be that joint. It's all good tho. Hitting Boston Fish for lunchies!
