I just tried calling Simplon Orient Express and both numbers I had for them were disconnected. Anyone in the Lincoln Square area know if they're still in business?

I was there a few months back on a Saturday evening, and the place was empty except for two guys drinking and smoking at the bar. The place looked and felt pretty dark and shabby - since this was my first time there, I didn't know if this was the norm or the exception. Our meal was nothing special, and to be honest, we felt that we werent't particularly welcome. We were a group of ten, and the hostess/waitress did it all - sat us, took our orders, poured drinks, and served the food, so that might have had something to do with it.

Several weeks ago there were surveyors' marks on the sidewalk, which usually means the building is being sold or will be undergoing certain types of construction. They were not open when we walked past around 7:45 PM on Sunday, November 13. I haven't been past there in the evening since then, but menus were still posted Wednesday afternoon.

I am pretty sure the same people owned both the restaurant and the building. They opened in the late 1970s. Combine aging owners and real estate that has appreciated a lot and you have a recipe for comfortable retirement. When Simplon opened, a taxidermist was in the building where Soiree is now and a thrift shop was where the Sulzer Library is now. The stretch of Lincoln between Montrose and Wilson was pretty dead then.
